I ditched my Westinghouse 37" LCD due to some pretty bad smearing that had developed over the last few months. It also started to leave burn in images of word docs and such.

I bought a Vizio 37" 120Hz LCD to replace it. And I am very happy with the quality of this monitor but it does not have any DVI connectors. It has 3 HDMI ports in the back and the assorted other VGA, etc... My 4870x2 has 2 DVI and a S-vid for ports so I had to use a DVI to HDMI adapter that came with my 4870x2. I have no computer sound what so ever.

The regular satellite works great theu the straight HDMI cable from the satillite box and the sound is perfect. But when I switch over to the computer I get no sound. The sound is being controlled by a ATI HDMI driver that comes with the Cat 9's. That was not the case with the Westinghouse LCD, probably due to the fact that I did not use a HDMI cable but a DVI cable.

My thoughts, I think I lost sound due to the DVI-HDMI adapter.

Your input is greatly apprecieated.

That's possible but it seems unlikely just because I think we would hear about lots of people using the adaptor in HTPCs and not getting sound.

A few thoughts -

Are there settings in the TV setup for what type of sound input signal to look for? Or which sound input to use?

I can't check myself but are there options for type of sound output from the ATi card in CCC or the audio control panel?

I'm thinking of some type of mismatched setting here, like maybe the TV is expecting a digital signal and the card is putting out LPCM. If it is the adaptor do you have another one? Or maybe try a DVI-HDMI cable instead of the adaptor.

The other possibility which would be bad is that they are incompatible if the HDCP handshake isn't working. You'd need to find someone with the same TV and a similar ATi card with the same drivers to see if they have sound working.

Thanks man. I have thoguth of that aswell. I did check both the Microsoft (control panel) and CCC and everything is good to go. No, I do not have another adapter. Maybe I should try to buy a DVi-HDMI cable like you suggested? Also, I am using the latest Catalyst drivers.

Try to reboot the PC with the TV looking at the PC. The HDMI Audio Driver won't initialize correctly unless it sees a valid HDMI Audio Receiver (at least I know my HD4650 in my HTPC won't give me any HDMI audio unless I have the HTPC's HDMI selected on my A/V Pre/Pro when I boot the HTPC).

Barring that, I dunno. DVI does not support HDMI Audio natively, but i believe most modern Video cards get around that - and I'd assume the included DVI>HDMI adaptor that came with your card should support audio as long aas the card does as well (but I dunno for sure, but if you have HDMI Audio Drivers, then it is a good bet). Does your TV have a SPDIF input that you could use (use the SPDIF OUT on your MoBo to SPDIF IN on TV, and set the TV accordingly).

Quick Q - How did you get Audio to your old Westinghouse? SPDIF or Analog or what? It didn't accept audio over DVI, correct?

Hmm, it did cross my mind but never did I think i would have to use a SPDIF for a new monitor. I have always used the analogue MS-OS system with my 500w Logitech 5.1 (that does not even work) to bring the sound in the house. There are same connectors on each part.

-Are you sending audio formats the TV can decode? Most TVs handle 5.1 AC3 and 2-channel PCM but not much else. 5.1/7.1 PCM or HD audio formats probably aren't going to work.

-IIRC, only one of the cards on a 4870x2 carries audio. Are you on the right one?

And did you try to re-boot the PC with the TV set on the PC Input? Again, the HDMI Audio Driver generally won't intialize unless it connects to a HDMI Audio Receiver (at least mine won't)

I figured he was sending the PC Audio to the TV via HDMI, and useing the TV Speakers to listen to the PC Audio. This likely won't work unless the PC is booted up while the TV has the PC HDMI Input selected so the HDMI Audio Driver can see that it is connected to an HDMI Audio Receiver (the TV), and correctly initialize the driver...

However, if you use the on-board soundcard on your MoBo (opposed to HDMI Audio), then make sure the correct "default sound device" is selected in the System Sounds panel...

DoooHH! That was it..sheesh! I have never had to do this since I upgraded to Vista. When I used the HDMI cable with the DVI adapter it recognized the audio in the HDMI cable and made that default sound device. I still think the dVI adapter is faulty. I ordered a couple cables from Monoprice.com today and one of them is a DVI to HDMI cable.

Thanks fellas!:)

The LCD can indeed affect this considering the LCD-TV has built in sound over HDMI and the Video card will recognize this HDMI Audio Path and install the HDMI Audio Drivers in this instance. If your LCD and/or Video Card does NOT support HDMI Audio (like most dedicated PC LCD's won't), then you would be correct, but that is not the case here as Krag is using a LCD-TV with Audio. Apparently, the HDMI audio driver is set as the default sound device and you don't hear anything from the MoBo's onboard audio since it is no longer the default sound device. So, either use the TV's speakers for PC Audio, or change the default Audio Device in the OS's Sound Properties if you need to use onboard audio. I think Krag already figured this part out - this response is strictly for "Clarity" ;)
