I have a raid 1 array setup with two 1tb drives.
one drive failed, yet with just 1 drive plugged in i dont see any of my data. Do i need both drives present to use the data on the drives?

your computer should operate normally and boot just fine if a drive fails under raid 1. except you will get a warning message typically while booting up saying you have a degraded array. is this the raid controller on your p5q? what status does the controller give you?
You shouldn't worry. I think you can repair your drive through the bootrom. Or if not, then through windows. That is what RAID1 is for.

with both drives in it showed a degraded state, one drive is not detected by my bios which leads me to assume its dead. im RMA'ing it to seagate since its a fairly new drive.
But as soon as i removed the dead drive my raid array failes to show up. the drive is detected by my bios and windows but its not mounted at all and thus all my data on it is not able to be accessed. Is this normal?
Yes i am using the intel raid controller on my motherboard and is my first time using raid.
