View Full Version : quick question...
I need to remove my old heatsink compound and reaply with arctic silver II and was wondering what would be the best way to remove it. I read that Isopropyl alcohol does the job for some thermal paste, but does it work for all? If so...does this also clean the whole processor, or just the core?
thks:beer:
*EDIT: also was wondering the best cleaner for a heatsink
Put some alcohol on a swab and clean it up. If it's a compound that alcohol doesn't work with try acetone (nail polish remover) or naptha (zippo lighter fluid).
You can clean the whole processor with it, I just wouldn't soak it.
Use the swab. If you need to, use an old toothbrush if you got it around those little components. Let it dry completely before reaplying and powering up.

Before installing ArticSilver II on my Cpu, i used Charcoal lighter fluid on both the Cpu and the bottom of the heatsink, the old thermal gunk came right off. I let both dry and both peices looked brand new!! I also used a razor blade to scrape it off. Careful on the CPU though!!! Hope this helps :D
