does laptops use the same +/- voltages pc's use? anyone know?
the project is, shoving a hacked laptop inside my mid at tower, and use it as a firewall/email server running something like net bsd. laptops have 2 pcmcia ports, so i figured i can get 2 pcmcia nic's for it. possibly a character lcd so i'll know when there's new mail etc. oh, and i was also thinking of adding a 2 port kvm around the drive bay. so i can just press a switch if i need to do something in the laptop.
what do you think is the best way to power it? if possible i'd like to just have one bigger psu that'll power both the tower and the laptop. yes the mid tower itself is a working pc, it's just a wide case that i can fit a cut down laptop over the pci slots.
any ideas?
I doubt it'll work. Don't know why but the labtop is very slim and there's definitely something different if you have the balls to open up and see then go for it.

is the lap top any good? do you use it on trips and stuff or is it strictly for email firewall stuff
mabey you could make a laptop "port" on your computer
take a mold of the back of your laptop or whatever and make all the cables fit in thouse places so you just have to push it in place and it starts.
also laptops do put out some heat so you proabbly dont want it touching your motherboard or anything like that

heres what else i was thinking
you could open it up to 180 degrees ( so its flat) and then just "window mod" into the side of the case
that way you can still look down and see what its up to but if you dont want to look at it its not in the way.
im not sure if you mean the lcd isnt working by that last post but if its not im not sure you need it ( i think you can disect it)
i think your molex idea is good but check that with a multimeter first.
if the lcd is broken and you can indeed take it off it would be really cool to mabey put it on some roolers ( like the keyboard tray rols out on) and one of thouse monitor selectors moded into the front so you could just slide it out and switch to "b" and work on your firewall or whatever
im just shooting out ideas let me know when your done i want to see a pic this look like a realy cool idea
