View Full Version : accessing the other side of acer cases

I have a proprietary acer system here, and need to properly screw down the DVD drive I'm installing. The amazing thing is, that only one side of the case comes off - the other side is actually riveted down. I had no idea how I'm meant to screw in the drive on the other side - it doesn't look like the 5 1/4" chassis is meant to unscrew, either (also riveted to the front panel).

Usually, those systems just have one side screwed in. Did you try removing the side you have access to and taking it out? They also release white papers for you computer, I'd suggest checking their site for it.

If the side is really riveted in place, check for hidden latch or lever, the drive cage may swing out or the whole side may swing out.

I have taken the side I can access off - the 3.5 bays are unscrewable, but the 5 1/4's aren't:

There's nothing behind that black bar that suggests any other way to get the 5 1/4's out... it seems to only be there to allow the lower 3.5 bay to detach.

The closest thing I've found to white papers for this (aspire t620) is here (http://support.acer-euro.com/documents/howto.html) - nothing seems all that relevant, I thought that the white paper for the dvd drive would include install instructions, unfortunately not.

From the photo... any ideas?

I see a lockpad symbol on the plastic. Those screws also don't hold the drive in place, they are a guide. Looks like it slides out the front...

PCs that have one side permanently mounted all of them I have seen, come with extra screws that you can access by pulling the face plate off the case, there should be 8-12 screws in 2 rows just below the external 3.5 openings. You use these screw in your external devices (DVD floppy or whatever) slide them in through the front openings, and as you insert them into the case they "lock" in place.

Looks like you case only has one lock on it though judging by the picture. And it is not an automatic one.

That black plastic thing slide up and down to lock?

Seems like it doesn't want to slide out the front, either:

Might be hard to tell from the pics, but it's riveted from the front, too. There doesn't seem to be anything holding it to the 3.5 bays to suggest it should come out the front, either... I was told to use "slip-in" screws, but the drive that was in there just used regular ones - would slip-ins work?

Neur0mancer: there are no screws on the faceplate, at all. I just asked someone about the case, and was told that I need "slip-in" screws (even though these aren't what the original drive was mounted with) - would these work, even if I can't get to that other side of the case?
