Your reviews as is should be fine - we need more lighter content as well as the heavy duty review stuff. Every article does not need to be a blockbuster, so long as it reflects interesting things going on in our community.
Anything you want to submit should be dropped into the article template available here, following the guidelines in the template:
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=619977
Send what you got to Earthdog, we'll take care of proofreading/editting, then we'll get your final OK before Joe posts it on overclockers.com.

The article Im writing, I should be able to tackle this weekend.
I have MIA's review in .doc format and completed a once over for spelling. I have a question though. These are not in a standard writing format per say. Are you looking for us/proofreaders to change words like 'gonna' to going to and set things up like that or is some deviation from that acceptable? Things like "..." as pauses are acceptable as well?
I.M.O.G.
10-12-09, 10:44 PM
We aren't being super picky right now - a style guide was being worked on by mdcomp and some people, but I'm not sure what progress has been made on that.
So to answer your question, we are doing what we can to make sure the articles read well right now. If they have a casual tone that reflects the authors personality, thats ok.
If development of a style guide is completed, we'll be looking to ensure style decisions like you asked about are made consistently. Without a documented guide tho, we don't have a strict policy.

How is MIA's article coming along?
I.M.O.G.
10-14-09, 02:24 PM
Forwarded Mia's article to mdcomp to review, he may have an update. At first glance, I don't see that he's sent it back yet.

Mia's article is ready, and waiting on Joe. We've got over a weeks worth of content in queue, so I'm not sure when he'll put things up - maybe we'll do 2 articles a day for some of the lighter stuff, like the couple articles I wrote.

The socket 775 piece is up - could you update the first post and start the frontpage discussion thread?
Miahallen's piece will be on the frontpage tomorrow, and its already available here:
http://overclockers.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4561:review-and-overclocking-results-of-the-gigabyte-ga-p55-ud3r-motherboard&catid=56:motherboards&Itemid=4262
You can get that in the first post as well, along with starting the frontpage discussion thread, whenever you have time. Miahallen's piece really looks great with all the pictures included - great stuff!
Thanks!

What's up with LOTES sockets and all that? I haven't followed it exactly, but I've seen a lot of discussion. Think we could find someone to write an article about whats going on?
Example:
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=624489
EarthDog
11-11-09, 05:44 PM
I PM'd MIA to write something up on it and he was busy and referred me to the Anand article. I will have to put something together myself and bounce the article off the experts. According to most the experts, and Anand, its a non issue except for Foxconn sockets and extreme voltage/cooling/overclocking.
I will put something together within the next couple of days..
sno.lcn
11-11-09, 08:11 PM
The Anandtech article is causing un-needed mass paranoia. There is no reason to avoid the Foxconn socket. The socket burning issues are in cases of people pushing 5ghz+ (how much % of the overclocking community does this?), and even then, it's not very wide spread. I know of far more people that haven't had any issues than those that have.
I'd rather not do a writeup on this (I'm already swamped), but I'll be more than happy to share any opinions I have on the matter.
EarthDog
11-11-09, 08:19 PM
Agreed. I will take care of the write up using several of you guru's as fact checkers on this. Remember though, the anand article does in fact say its only the extreme overclockers (LN2+) that are experiencing these issues. However it doesnt quantify the rate its occurring within that group either.
Most people should know you will see more bad news items than good news items on the webzzzzz and I havent seen much of this so that in itself tells me something.

Earthdog - Sno.lcn is going to be moving to focussing on just Extreme Cooling and Benchmarking Team stuff. That said, he'll still likely be pushing some content your way in the CPU and motherboard areas. Just wanted to give you a heads up, since this leaves you as THE goto guy for Intel CPUs/Mobo's.
Here are the experts he had listed for these sections:
Maxi
Ross
Gautam
Brolloks
These are the articles he has recorded as published, you can add this to your published list:

Hokie... Please check out the rough format of the X58 mobo article. I added newegg links to the boards, but Im thinking I should also insert pictures for each. I will likely have to get them through newegg so credit would have to go to them. I could set that up in the pictures though.
The spacing on WP though is perplexing at best. I see a space in the editor, then the preview doesnt show the space (between entry level boards and prior paragraph and last paragraph as well). I havent even put the pictures in yet so this could get ugly quick again.
I.M.O.G.
12-07-09, 11:26 AM
You'll likely need to use HTML to get the spacing right. I think it ignores white space in the wysiwyg.
The <br> or <p> tags should get you what you want I think. If not, splat likely has advice for you also.
EarthDog
12-07-09, 11:30 AM
It ignores *some* white space(s) it seems... In the other article I created, it spaced just fine even when there were no spaces initially. Same in this article. Thats the perplexing part to me.
I will read up on how to properly use that code. I do not know HTML at all really.
I.M.O.G.
12-07-09, 11:32 AM

12-07-09, 12:03 PM
What would you think about putting them in bulletted lists? Less free space with enough of a separator to make it easier to read.
EarthDog
12-07-09, 12:08 PM
I just seperated it out by making a bold header,
ENTRY
sdfsdaf
dsfasdf
adfdsf
GAMER
sdfsdf
sdfsdfs
sdfsdf
ENTHUSIAST
sdfgdfsg
dsfgsdfg

...But can do that as well. I want to get the pictures in there and see how both styles look though. I like both ideas... Maybe bullet them and add all pictures below it with captions for clarity would be best?
hokiealumnus
12-07-09, 12:12 PM
Sounds good. This was my intent:

Anyway, just an idea. Your article, feel free how to format as you wish. We're happy to help if something needs editing. Same with the images.
Captions with images may be clearer, you're right. In the caption, add the source as well. Like this - (Source: Newegg.com) and link Newegg.com to the original image (not just the newegg home page).

I like the picture idea. Just make sure it doesn't make the page too wide. If it does, perhaps two pictures side-by-side with a third centered under them. Like this without dashes:
Photo - Photo
-----Photo-----
EarthDog
12-07-09, 12:40 PM
Thats how I was planning on it being done.. But that is a feat in itself with WP. I tried that and have to L justify one, R justify the other and then it looks all gap toothed. Centering doesnt do it either. Teach me oh wise one!
Also I edited and saved with bullets and the bullets dont show in the preview...
Off to lunch.

It looks like sno composed his article originally in a web editor, like frontpage or a similar adobe product which probably wrote the html and style for him and is more complex/easier than the wordpress wysiwyg editor.
The "style=" is inline styling, applied to the html elements. Inline styling should generally be avoided, but is good to use for this sort of stuff.
Proper usage of these parts are the most important pieces of getting the layout right:
"<p style="text-align: center">" - This is applied to all 3 images, and gets the entire group of images centered together
"<img class="alignnone" - This is applied to the first 2 images, and gets them to sit nicely side by side
"<img class="aligncenter" - This is applied to the 3rd image, and gets it centered nicely below the 2 above

I just copied and pasted from Word into wordpress and attached/inserted the images.
I didn't use any code for formatting either, just the buttons provided by WP.

Wow cool, I stand corrected. You did a good job with it.

Ya, the align right and align left things were frustrating for me at first, because it was unintuitive to me the way it worked. I think earthdog thought the same thing the way he was trying to use them - then I started using align-none and stuff started to cooperate.
EarthDog
12-07-09, 02:03 PM
Yes, indeed. B/c on his other one, it was from Word and I inserted the pics I had issues getting them to do exactly that.
What did you do in WP to get two pics centered across the middle? no align, highlight both and center?

Lovely, one picture shows a caption, I add it in the others, it doesnt work. Formatting all jacked up. Sizes. Yikes. Nobody kept their fingers crossed for me did they? :)
WAS my sig ninja chopped? I thought I linked that i7 thread internally to a post here (which was then an external link..?)
I.M.O.G.
12-07-09, 04:48 PM
It was linked directly external, so was whacked by me. I figured you couldn't hate me for not mentioning it.
We'll have a guide soon which helps ease the issues your seeing - sorry, formatting can be a pain, but it doesn't need to be. Better instructions will help this.

I am looking for suggestions on how to get the formatting correct on these pictures. I create the picture with a caption medium sized so it will fit 2 centered. It dumps it at the TOP of the article/post. NOT where I clicked to have it. I move the picture down where it needs to be since it didnt initially place it where I wanted/clicked. It moves just fine. However the caption stays up top. If I move the caption down, it becomes just text and doesnt show the caption in preview mode either. If I attempt to re add the caption, its doesnt work at all.
Please tell me those instructions are coming sooner than later! I have worked on this stuff for many hours and cant get it right so far. Any advice anyone will have now would be greatly appreciated so I can help pump this article out.

12-09-09, 10:21 AM
Hope this helps...
First step, if your using IE, stop. Also, click on preview, do not do an open in new tab or window on the preview button or it won't show you the right preview.
Second step, if your text cursor is placed where you want the image, clicking the insert image link should insert the image there.
Third step, add all pictures align center, and do not include pictures side by side. Look at sno.lcn's insulation guide for an example of this.
Fourth step, insert caption when you insert the picture, or insert it in the regular flow of the text, like I did with sno.lcn's article formatting.
Fifth step, let me know if this helps at all.
Finally, we just got the lightbox plugin yesterday - you can see how it works on sno's article. Now that we have it, we'll be looking closer at how we want to handle images long term. For now, the instructions above are the answer because they are simple and they have been tested to work.

1. I have no choice but to use IE at the office which is where the overwhelming majority of my time at this site happens. Thats how I use preview. I click on the preview button and another tab pops up with the preview (IE7). I will have to change that as it open a new tab by default. How would I change this??? IE options?
2. It does most of time. However sometimes it does not. When a picture is already in the gallery for example, I would click on the location I want the picture, go into add picture, gallery, and it adds up top. IE issue?
3. Align center will not allow me to place the pictures next to each other as requested and described above by Hokie. Would you like them aligned that way now???
4. Thats where I do it on the initial picture add. Initially, it works. When moving a picture, the caption doesnt move with it, nor does it manage to 'reattach' when you move the caption to the picture or in the area of the picture. it then shows up as text. It appears it has to be right the first time.
5. I will check Sno's article and see. Thats sort of a help as I already do most of what you have mentioned. Thing is, I dont have hours at home to do this stuff. I wont get on my PC until around 9PM when my family goes to sleep.
Currently I have all the pictures in place physically w/o captions as hokie suggested and you preferred. I will realign center and add captions after I hear back from you...
EDIT: Also, the bullets are still not showing up in the preview, but are there in the edit.
I.M.O.G.
12-09-09, 10:41 AM
1. Ugh
2. IE issue, haven't seen this on firefox
3. Go with align center, it should be easier to get right - we're trying to improve our image standards so it doesn't keep griefing authors/CEs
4. This appears to be a wordpress weirdness, haven't seen this happen first hand tho. If it wasn't for #1 above, you'd likely be in better shape
5. Cool
Currently I have all the pictures in place physically w/o captions as hokie suggested and you preferred. I will realign center and add captions after I hear back from you...
If you've got it right now, leave it as it is. If it's still messed up, do it the way I just described if it makes it easier.
For the rest of the details, if there's anything else you can't get right, just leave it to us to put the finishing polish on. You've done more than your fair share working on this one, and I appreciate it.
EarthDog
12-09-09, 11:31 AM
Its only the pictures/captions that are giving me grief ATM. :)
I have it right as in their physical location, however I do not have the captions in there as that screws up the formatting as requested. It almost appears like the pictures need to be properly sized first, with captions in mind, before adding them. Its not a very flexible editor in that respect. Im going to save this, move it forward and let you guys spit shine it... :)

Hey guys...not to rain on this parade...but I don't like the idea so much...
Don't get me wrong, his photos are excellent, and his write-ups very comprehensive, there's nothing wrong with his work :)
What I'm not so sure about is how this might detract from our somewhat exclusive content... ...none of the writers here are under contract. My first front page article was also posted many places. But after realizing the potential benefit to the site, and a "platform" for me to display my work, I decided all my future articles would be exclusive to OC.com (and my Japanese/English blog for the Japanese markets).
I don't think we should not publish the article, but I would suggest speaking with him and seeing if he is interested in publishing his stuff here exclusively, and linking "news" posts at other forums like I have been doing.
Maybe he likes the way he does it, and won't be interested....on the other hand, he might be very receptive to the idea  It sure would save him a lot of leg work posting his stuff in all the various forums around the net...plus it would be great for OC.com exposure as was already mentioned ;)
Just some things to consider guys
EarthDog
01-22-10, 06:47 AM
Good points..... Management? Sounds like something you/they may want to handle...
**pulls up chair**
BUT...these at other sites are just threads, like they are here, now. This will be the only site that would have it as a front page article so its exclusive in that right compared to all others.
I also have a concern as well I would like to discuss privately...
I.M.O.G.

I'm all ears.
I'll talk to windwithme and see what his thoughts are.
Subject: Exclusive content on overclockers.com
Hey bud,
Some well respected forum members brought your work to my attention and I
wanted to contact you about your reviews. First of all, you do great work
- my compliments to you! We'll be posting your forum reviews to the blog
on overclockers.com as discussed, but I also wanted to ask if you'd like
to make the full content of your reviews exclusive to Overclockers.com.
Currently, I know that you post them across various forums, creating all
the individual posts necessary. I've created your account for
http://overclockers.com/wp-admin where you are now an author - this means
you can create your own posts there, which will be proofread, editted, and
then scheduled for publishing. This has potential to increase the quality
of your work because spelling, grammar, as well as format has many eyes
looking at it before it gets published. Additionally, I noticed you were
using imageshack for your image hosting - Overclockers.com can provide
image hosting for you also. Our wordpress backend makes it easy for you
to upload individual photos, or bulkload a whole group of photos - if you
haven't used wordpress before, it is very easy to use and learn.
So this is what I'm suggesting - when you have a review, enter and format
it directly on overclockers.com first and submit it for review. We'll
proofread and edit it for you, then fast track it to published status.
Then, rather than starting multipost threads across various forums, you
can just make single posts across various forums introducing the article
with a summary, and linking back to Overclockers.com for the full article.
It should improve your articles overall, as well as make it a bit easier
and quicker to get your material in front of a lot of eyeballs -
overclockers.com gets about 1 million visits a month, which translates to
several million pageviews. :)
Let me know if your interested,
Matt Bidinger (IMOG)

I hope IMOG has made some contact with him at this point.....we have been trying as we would like to see him load these in to Wordpress himself... Regardless I will look into that one, good find, again, man!!

Update. I'm putting the H55 review off until next month. Since 890GX (AMD) is a brand new chipset, I think MSI will want me to put that one on top priority. They're both going to be near identical reviews anyway. Except for the LN2 on H55 :D
I'll try and have the X58A-UD7 article finished by the end of the week. I can't promise the writeup will be finished, but the testing will be. It may even be a two-parter, because LN2 testing on this is first priority because of Forum Wars. Hehe it'll probably only see like an hour of use on air before freezing it
First week of March I'll be on vacation for a week. Don't know if I'm taking stuff to review with me or not. So I'm going to be busting my ass this week to get as much finished as I can.

Just sent you a PM, check the image guidelines here - following them will shorten the time between submission and publishing, as well as ensure your images are presented in a way that is easily viewable (sans scrolling) for most users of the website:
http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=629930
In the past, we've been fixing this in the editorial process fairly often, but it does take time which we have to fit into our schedules, which prolongs the lead time before publish.

Disregard the last PM I sent you I.M.O.G. I noticed I haven't been clicking the "file URL" button
hokiealumnus
03-22-10, 02:21 PM
The images are also too large sno. 800px max on all sides. They can be smaller to maintain the aspect ratio, but it's an absolute max 800px x 800px.
I.M.O.G.
03-22-10, 02:27 PM
The reason for that is what displays nicely with the website layout, which accommodates the majority of our reader's default resolution so they can see everything without scrolling (we know our reader's resolutions from google analytics).
If you want a quick way to resize, installing and using image magick is probably best. Here's how to use it:
http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/resize/
Windows install files are here:
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/binary-releases.php#windows
Image Magick will take a little reading to understand how to resize from the command line using it. After 5 minutes of reading however, you should be able to resize all your images very easily in the future... Much quicker than editting each in a GUI graphics program like mspaint or photoshop.

Heh, was just typing you a PM (YHPM). This is what I do:
Resize all your images before uploading them. You can do it by batch using something like VZO image resizer (http://www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/). Set it to the resolution you need (800x800), tell it to keep the aspect ratio, and let it go to town. If you need help with that at all, let me know.
If you resize them using wordpress that's fine, but linking them that way is a huge pain because of how WP handles the image file names (it doesn't handle it well). If you click "File URL" on a resized image it looks like it plays dumb and links to the full res photo.
EDIT - As slow as the WP image manipulation is, I bet that will save you a ton of time too. :)

Hey sno... I dont see your article for H55, just the X58A............
EDIT: Wow, 2 pages in there (still didnt see his H55 article), I guess content isnt an issue or is there that much dead stuff that may/may not need pruned?
EDIT2: I resize them in Paint in W7. Its a button on the 'ribbon' interface that allows you to put in what size you want. I just take the larger of the number and make it 800. It will keep the same aspect ratio by default. can knock out a bunch quick that way. ;)

ED - No need to send anything to proofreaders. Use them more as a reference and not to proofread articles in general (see this post (http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6436296&postcount=12)). CEs should proofread as best they can and then forward it to us. If you have a specific question about language issues and need a second opinion, that's what he's there for. There is only one now and we're trying not to tax him, especially since he's a CE himself. :)

Earthdog, I'd like to try out something new. Once you are done, could you place a checkmark next to mage_x and wonderingsoul in the notifications box in wordpress then leave an editorial comment asking whoever gets to it frist to look it over?
They're both doing some proofreading/grammar polishing for us, and we've found its helping us get articles published faster.

I'm thinking only admins have access to modify the notifications subscriptions, I wasn't sure which is why I was having earthdog check. Unfortunately, this is part of the edit flow plugin which is already partially broken, not sure if I can delegate access to the notifications piece. I'll check it out. Thanks for the feedback.

Authors are usually automatically added to the notification list, Miah was not added to the notification list due to a problem we were having with a plugin and some troubleshooting I was doing to fix it (notifications for authors are working again, other things are still broke).
When I noticed he wasn't notified, I manually corrected that. Going forward, notification for post authors should work automatically.
