I'm currently running my HD 4850 from HDMI to DVI-D to the HDMI port to my Sharp Aquos, I'm not getting any sound to my tv, is there some sort of setting in catalyst driver to enable sound?

dvi does not carry sound, so you need a cable from your sound card or onboard sound to your tv

Oh, I thought the dvi-d to hdmi would carry sound, too.. But the thing is when I brought a seperate audio cable from my soundcard to tv, there wasn't any sound either.

I thought ATI cards could carry sound over DVI? Isn't that one of their selling points?

Oh, and in order to use the 3.5mm jack on the Aquos, you have to use the VGA in. Otherwise it won't pick up sound from that jack.
I have an Aquos in the other room... nice TV :D

Yes, lovely TV! So I won't be able to bring sound through using HDMI? Btw, is there some sort of setting to make my icons and font more sharp on the tv? Seems to be odd looking every time I hook up the computer to Aquos..

I'm not too sure... i never used HDMI. I know the best i could get my card to push to the TV was 1920x1080 at 30Hz. That's what component'll get you ha
That card should be able to run audio over HDMI. I know it actually installs an HDMI Audio Driver on my system. Is your computer set to output to that audio device? It should be "HDMI High Definition Audio" of something like that.
BTW, i have the same card... it just died on me though :(

oh wait, you got me confused when you said hdmi to dvi. you should of said it the other way around. you should get sound from hdmi if you're using the hdmi converter the card comes with. but with a seperate cable dvi to hdmi cable you won't.
Guys guys, DVI can't carry sound, it doesn't matter if it's ATi, Nvidia, Sony, or whatever, it won't carry sound. HDMI is the one that does carry sound.

I was never able to get 1920x1080 using component.. It always said "signal not supported"

Heh, i got it, but it was horrible... Games looked okay, but using the desktop was impossible.
And it's fine. I'mma try a few tricks, and if they don't work, guess i'll just get another lol

from what i have read in the past, ati DVI to HDMI carry audio. as the card has a onboard digital pass thru chip. i havent tried using mine no drivers installed for it. since it has been a while since i installed CCC drivers, i do recall a option of installing the onboard audio chip drivers but didnt. are you sure they are installed?

This. Audio over HDMI works fine to my Samsung. In the windows device manager, I have 2 HD audio devices listed, one is the onboard audio, the other one I believe is the chip on the 4850, so I'd check there to see if you have any unknown devices.
Also what OS are you using? I'm using Vista and in the playback devices menu, one that pops up when clicking on the little volume icon, I have a "Digital Output Device (HDMI)" option which I need to use for audio over HDMI. Don't know if XP/7/other OSes have something similar.

Yeah, I've gotten it to work just fine before as well, even used it through a home theatre system.
Like it's been said, make sure you install the audio drivers with the video drivers, you can just download the ati drivers and make sure the audio is checked when you install.
And like it's been said, you need to make the HDMI output your default audio device, most likely it is not. Change it in your audio settings.

What is the native rez of the TV? If it's 1366x768 then that will look better. If it's 1920x1080 then that should look better.
ATI's DVI-HDMI adapter uses some of the analog video pins (which aren't used in HDMI, but are needed for a DVI-VGA adapter) to pass audio through the adapter. It's proprietary, so you can't use just any DVI-HDMI adapter or cable.
You should be able to use a separate audio cable as well if your TV supports it. You'll want to use a coax or optical SPDIF cable, and you might have to change some options on your TV to get it to work.

I have a 3450 DVI to HDMI going to my TV and it carrys sound. Make sure to change the default sound device to HDMI and it should work just fine.

...and once you get it all connected up, reboot the computer. Sometimes the sound won't enable if whatever you're trying to play is already open. I learned this with NFL.com's Game Pass subscription. Have it streaming from my Dell Studio's HDMI port directly into my Sammy LCD and it looks wonderful. I never could get the sound to work right when I tried to run the HDMI through my receiver so I gave up and went through the TV speakers. EW.
