I'm building an extra rig out of my spare parts as I upgrade, and I'm in need of a graphics card since when I upgrade my 8800GTX it won't fit in the case.

This rig will replace the ~5yr old "family laptop" and will be used by my mom/dad/bro.

I'm looking for a GPU that can run Crysis @ 1680x1050 w/ decent settings, no AA/AF needed. It needs to run at least as smooth as with the 8800GTX. My bro's requirement

Family Laptop:
Compaq Presario 2200
Intel Celeron M 350 Single-Core 1.3GHz (13x100MHz)
1GB PC-2700
Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics
No wireless capabilities

The "New" Rig So Far:
Intel E5200
Asus P5N-E SLI 650i
4x1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800
Cooler Master Elite 360

GPU Restrictions:
PSU will be a NZXT PP500 w/ two 12v rails, a 16A and 17A.
GPU can be no longer 241mm (9.5").
Budget = (8800GTX Sell Price) + ~$25
The quieter, the better. (possible HTPC in the future)

GPU Options (based on length):
GTS250 512MB = ~241mm (9.5")
HD4850 512MB = ~235mm (9.25")
HD4770 512MB = ~210mm (8.25")

To me it seems like the HD4850 is my best bet, plenty of room to spare and costs the same as the HD4770. Any other options?

Thanks guys.

HD5750, due to be released this week :) It will be faster than any of the cards you listed and have very reasonable power draw. It might be a *touch* over budget depending upon availability and price jacking but it's a far better choice imo. Make your bro throw in a few bucks and tell him it's DX11 zomg! hehe.

You guys think I'll need 1GB for 1680x1050?

Haven't heard about those, I'll at least have to check those out before I make a purchase.

I came REALLY close to pulling the trigger on the XFX HD4770 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150369) (It has the "good" cooler). I've also seen quite a few OC reviews on the HD4770 flashed to Asus TOP BIOS for voltage control through SmartDoctor, and 1000MHz core w/ 1000MHz memory (4000MHz effective) seems very common.

4770 is a great card! The GDDR5 memory puts it up there past the 4830 and almost on par with the 4850 :) for 4770

4770 lower power than the 4850 and more than enough punch to last awhile in a non gaming PC

What about the 5770/50 ? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102859

4770 or 5750...If I can scrounge up the extra $30, and find a buyer for my 8800GTX (I hope they still sell), I'll prolly go 5750.

GTX260 216 or HD5850 would be my choices for that requirement. Im not certain a 4770 is going to cut it for crysis at that res even without AA.

Those would definitely be better, but I'm pretty sure those cards aren't under 9.5" in length. The 8800GTX runs Crysis fine at 1680x1050 with highest settings and no AA; and it looks like the 4770 beats the 8800GTX in all but memory size/bandwith (OC on both). Think I should get something with more than 512MB RAM?

With no AA and the res you are at, its doubtful today's games will use that much ram. Put the AA on it though and you are easily hitting 512mb in a few games at least.

Sorry I missed the length requirement.. Isnt the GTX260 and GTX250 the same size?

No prob. Thanks for the RAM info, I've always been stumped on determining how much RAM is needed for what resolution/AA.

Depending on how much I can get for the 8800GTX, that will determine whether I get 4770 or 5750.

At least I have things narrowed down...

well i got a 4770 on a trade new in the box and i was shocked!!
i have a 4850 with asus bios 680/1050
and now the 4770 i oc with ccc 830/850
not bad 3dmark06 scores and the funny thing is my oc for my cpu temps went
down ..less heat from the 4770 before 32-34 c surfing the web and now its 29-31 surfing the web load temps temps down 3c ...my games play the same
hulu looks better on the 4770...the 4770 real good bang for the buck so i think 4770 or 5770 will work great for you
