ok this is a confusing one
i have
windows 7 64bit
a realtek built in hd audio device (alc889a)
the latest realtek driver from the official site (Vista_Win7_R234.exe)
a pioneer vsx-c300 (http://uk.shopping.com/xPF-Pioneer-VSX-C300)

The pioneer is connected to the als889a by an optical wire.

Now if i go to the test page of sound propities of "realtek digital output" the following happens
dts audio (on reciever digital and dts and multich light up) sound from all 4 speakers and the center
Dolby digital (on reciever digitial and dolby digital and multich light up) sound from all 4 speakers and the center

so the onbourd card can out put dolby and dts

however in every other application or game it stays in stero mode !!!

this is driving me up the wall as if i select 5.1 or surround sound in games i still only get stereo.

when i hook a 360 or ps3 to the pioneer alls good and i get full surround sound
when i run the pc test all is good and it is full surround sound for the duration of the test

i cant right click the device to set the speakers like you can with the analog settings

im sure im missing something obvious any ideas?

Easy fix my friend. Reboot comp and go to safe mode. Uninstall Realtek then run driver sweeper from www.guru3d.com and choose Realtek and clean. Now reboot and you are back in normal mode. Now install the Realtek latest which is 2.34 .. here is the link to that http://www.filecluster.com/Drivers/Sound-Cards/Download-Realtek-High-Definition-Audio.html

Install the 2.34 drivers and reboot. Now set to 5.1 and see if you can hear from all channels when gaming. gl

ok i followed all the steps but i cant see where to select 5.1 ?

as i test i ran sims 3 set audio to 5.1 the pioneer still only had the stereo and digitial lights lit and there was no audio from the back speakers

i rebooted and loaded sims3 up again the 5.1 option was still selected but the pioneer still only displayed stereo and digitial.

as a quick test i went into audio propities for the realtek digital audio and did the dts test and the dolby digitial test both tests produced sound from all 5 speakers and green lights lit up on the pioneer for dts and dolby during the respective tests

this is driving me nuts

If your software is set to 5.1 , then it should produce sounds even if the game is stereo.

The test works hmmm.. You have realtek right ? , I forgot,,,
