View Full Version : CD-Rīs?

The other day I was ripping apart a few busted CD-Rīs, and I discovered that what gets "burned" actually just a thin layer of some goof. A powder or something.

Does anybody know what differs a 10x certified disc from a 24x certified disc? The quality of the goof?

regards,
Henry.

the speed grade has more to do with the strength of the plastic. A 10X disc being burned at 24X could very well fly apart in the drive:) Also, the higher the speed the better balanced it is on the spindle.

It's happened to me, usually only with my 72x though.

Yo man, think about dis: There ainīt too many 10x CD readers out there any more....if what youre saying is true, most CD-Rīs would fly apart when you read ém....

the speed rating is certified for the organic dye that is actually burnt during writing
to sustain a high speed write the dye must be able to be written to at a certain speed
simple

Henry- most CD readers do not read the disc at the same speed all the way across, so a disc is never in danger of being destroyed- it reads at tops speed only on the innermost track. A reader also does not normally read the whole disc at a time, so it is spun up only for short periods.

A burner spins it at a constant high speed while it is being burned, thus subjecting it to WAY more stress than when it is just being read.

Find some 4X discs and try to burn them in your 24X, you'll see what I mean. 9 out of 10 will work fine until BAM broken disc and shards everywhere.

I have one of those TrueX 72X drives, I used to kill a LOT of discs with that thing before I started buying faster-rated blanks.

I havenīt actually even tried out my burner yet - I got about 60 Kodak Ultima 80 mins left. They are certified for 12x, Iīm gonna try out and see if they can stand faster speeds. If anybody is intrested I will post the results.

_72x_? Wut brand is that, never heard of such a fast CD-ROM. How much noise does it make?

Henry.

It's a "True-X" by Kenwood, absolutely the fastest CDROM drive you can buy. Remember those, they were all the rage for quite a while, everybody had one. Not too common now for some reason

Here's some info. (http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/Drives/KWTX72.shtml)

Sounds like a frikkin helicopter when it hits tops speed, I had to isolate it with rubber washers to keep the vibrations down. Not as loud as my HSF fan tho:)

The TrueX actually spins slower than a generic 56x max CD-ROM drive. That ZEN multi-beam technology makes it able to read a swath of multiple tracks at once so it reads data at a 72x rate but the disk only spins at about 12-16x speed, if that. They're very quiet.

hmm, you mean it's not supposed to be loud? I know about the 3-beam thing, maybe it's messed up. It says 72x on it on the front, it is kenwood so I thought it was a trueX one- lemme take a look at it and see what I can see:)

I have a 72x TrueX and it's silent but my Toshiba 16x/40x DVD-ROM is a lot louder. The Kenwood website (http://www.kenwoodtech.com/72x.html) has all the info you need. I want to find a source for more...they're the best CDROM drives around.

LOL _7-beam_ laser!!

That sounds really intresting! I checked with the biggest online suppliers in Sweden, but none of them had it. Is this a hard-to-get item?

Henry.

It is here in the US too. I found one store that sold it retail, but no others.
