I didn't know whether to post this in the video card section or the motherboard section so I just posted at both in hopes of some expert help.
Could someone read through this email and tell me if you think I have a AGP slot? I sent an email to gateway tech support looking for my motherboard specs. I want to get a geforce3 ti 500 and want to make sure I can use it on my cpu. Above all my PCI slots I have one brown slot and I thought it might be a AGP slot. I'm not for sure though. Below is the reply from gateway.

Thanks for your time and help.

Yes you have an agp slot which is the brown slot above your pci slots. Your mobo /cpu will work fine with the Ti500 although it would be better to have a faster cpu, like a PIII 1 gigger , but what you have will work.

But you must make sure you can disable the onboard video that is provided by your motherboard. This should be able to be disabled in your bios. Check that first!! before buying the Ti500

Cisco Kid

you have an i815 chipset which is a decent board replacing the trusty and highly overclockable 440 BX chipset such as the original Abit BE6-II version 1.0 mobo

Your mobo link doesn't work. From what you described I don't think it has one (Says nothing about AGP). You can tell from the picture if there was any hook us up with the right click.

I don't know if your chip would be fully utilizing Ti500 but I'd get a Ti200 instead as your chip suites more with it then wasting more money on a Ti500.

My two cents.

I don't know man, that email does not anyplace say you have an AGP slot- it however DOES mention a CNR slot, which is also small and brown and could easily be mistaken for an AGP

Check this way- an AGP slot is the brown one above all the white ones in this picture. Notice how it is offset to the right of the white PCI slots.

I have 5 white slots (pci slots) and then right above it I have the brown slot which is above all the white slots and slightly to the right of the pci slots. Its close to 3 inches long. But, gateway didn't say anything in the email about my mb having a agp slot. Thanks for all of your help and maybe I will find out for sure. As of now I take it that the brown slot is an agp slot. Thanks for all of your help.

The one guy suggested maybe I should just get a geforce 3 ti 200 card. What do you guys think? Should I just get one of those instead? I have heard you can overclock these close to ti 500 specs. :)

He is prob right about saving some money and getting a Ti200. I don't think a P3-733 can make full use of a Ti500 anyway. I guess I would base the decision on wether or not you plan on upgrading the cpu. One of the new fast Celerons in your box would make for a very nice speed bost.

I have to agree with monster, check to make sure you have an AGP slot. The information given about the motherboard shows that there are 6 slots in total. 5 PCI white and 1 CNR which is brown.

If you do have a 7th slot then chances are it is an AGP slot, but the AGP slot will be the bigger of the two I believe. The big brown slot in the link above as an ISA slot and the smaller is the AGP.

I know I am just repeating what everyone else said, but make sure before you buy.

John

edit: I believe the AGP slot is closer to being over 4 inches long

Don't feel bad John, finding a picture of that Mobo wasn't easy. Finding it's specs was even harder :p

Thanks for all your help guys. So what do I get the geforce ti 200 or the geforce ti 500?

And should I wait for Feb 5 when the geforce 4 comes out to see if the price drops? I'm getting a geforce 3 so I can play the upcoming Tiger Woods 2002 pc. Its fully 3d so everyone is upgrading to the geforce 3's. It is suppose to be released sometime on or after feb 13. So I guess I would still have time to wait and see if they drop in price and then make a move! Thanks again

Will the person that answers that question also shoot me a PM and let me know if Msft stock will be up or down tomorrow so I can call my broker :p

If you are planning on upgrading the cpu in a year or so, and plan on making the mobo and Video card last you a couple years then get the ti500.....Thats just my opinion

Yodums and Ken made good points about the ti200

Buying a video card is tough these days, I was going to buy a Abit ti500 but an opportunity to buy a ATI 8500 presented itself and I bought that.

I'm not trying to start a ATI vs Nvidia discussion, I'm merely mentioning I bought the best bang for the buck at the time.

Sam brought up a very good point. Whehter you are going to upgrade your computer sometime soon then yes it would be wise to get the Ti500. But if you don't see an upgrade anytime soon then I wouldn't get the Ti500 and save your money while buying the Ti200.

Well Looks like I made a mistake, sorry bout that guys, although I searched intel for the board he has and it is based on the 815 chipset , what I read lead me to believe he does have an agp slot based on what I read at tomshardware.com but I see now that it is a gateway system, so it prolly is not a agp slot as the board has onboard video.

OOPPS my mistake, I did not read enough of his post , I just assumed....

Thanks for not flogging me
