The discussion in another thread made it very obvious using an SSD for a primary drive would provide some dramatic improvements. Therefore, when I receive Windows 7 in a few weeks, I am going to use a new 80 GB Intel G2 SSD as the primary drive. I intend to use the SSD to hold only the operating system and software applications. I am also going to install a new 1 GB WD Black HDD as a secondary drive and use it to store all the memory intensive data such as pictures, video files, music library, MS Office documents, etc.

Now, exactly how do I do this?

If my memory serves me correctly, the "Libraries" folder and all the associated sub-folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, My Documents, Public Documents, etc.) get created automatically when the operating system is installed. I do not remember an option as to what drive to create them on.

Is there a way to install these folders on the secondary drive or will I be locked into having them and all the associated data files located on the SDD?

i dont have an ssd, but i am guessing you would move the entire 'users ' folder to your WD black, and then create shortcuts on your ssd, so whenever a program looks for the library folder, it is directed to the mechanical harddrive instead of the ssd

i dont think its possible to choose where seperate folders go during windows installation, you can only choose the hard drive they will all go on.

i think someone should write a guide on how to do this :)

If you go to your user's folder (e.g. C:\Users\%username%), right click on the common folders that get redirected like Desktop/Downloads/My Documents and select Properties. You can select their location using the "Location" tab. This is where you would set it to be on the HDD.

You can change the location by right clicking on the start menu too, My music->right click, properties, and you can add locations here, this should work and you can set the default save location also.

You can remap all of your folders easily, but the favorite locations folders in windows explorer will require remapping to.

Its all self explanatory in the menus.

Have fun :)
