so I got one today and installed windows7 on it. but upon formatting it, windows created this "system reserved" drive worth 100MB's. It was assigned the drive letter V.

My guess is its some kind of ram disk booting thing, because I see a folder named boot. its a system file thats not visible by simply hiding/unhiding files. I had to check view system files to see this.

also, I switched from IDE to ACHI in the bios before installing, but not sure if that has anything to do with it. (also installed a syba sata raid card thats currently not in raid. but I doubt this has anything to do with it either)

so anyone know what this is?

Windows 7 and maybe Vista use it for system files, so its not a x-25 issue.

nevermind, I found out its a safety feature implemented by microsoft a few years back. its called bitlocker. its totally useless to a home end user like me though.

there are ways around this I hear.

Yes, this has been like this since the beta version of 7

check these links out:

http://www.vista123.net/content/hack-remove-100-mb-system-reserved-partition-when-installing-windows-7

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/01/09/how-to-avoid-200mb-hidden-system-partition-from-been-created-during-windows-7-installation/

i means it's only 100mb, won't make much of a difference.

I'm wondering the same since both of mine will be coming very soon :)

I thought that 100Meg partition was strictly for booting operations. Bitlocker is only used in a few versions of the OS. As well Win7 makes the partition, Vista from my experiance with Ultimate Edition did not.

well, I have a raptor x 150g that the SSD replaced. the windows7 rating went from 5.9 I think to 7.7 :D cant imagine how fast they'll be in raid. lol

it only creates it when you do a fresh install of windows on an unpartitioned drive. so if you have it partitioned before going into the install, nothing happens.

The partition is for the boot loader and microsoft recovery utility.
