View Full Version : 4830 + 4850 in CrossfireX
Hi,
I am planing to go crossfire with my pc, i currently have a XFX 4830, and I was planing to get another 4830, but since I bought my card at the beginning of the year all the prices have dropped and now the 4830 is MORE expensive then a 4850. so I wanted to know. can I put a 4830 in crossfire(X) with a 4850? and does it matter if the one card has 512mb and the other has 1gb?

You can, but itll run at the speed of the slowest card, If you get the HD4850 cheaper than the 30, then just go for it. It'll be a step up for sure. And AFAIK it'll still only use 512 of video RAM, (again takes the lowest value..+ other reasons that I don't know the specifics). You'd just make the HD4850 the 'master' card. But in short, yes, it'll work =)
ok. i think i'll just get the 4850 and use it in crossfire and then in the future i'll buy another 4850 to replace my 4830, since by this time next year they'll be dirt cheap :)

It will only have the memory of the smallest card, as it stores the same data on each card so if one has more there is no benefit.
Why not see how much it would cost to jump to a DX11 HD5770? The 5770 is just slower than a HD4870, but probably overclocks similar to a HD4890 and has DX11 support as well as some other good features. It probably won't be as quick as the CF setup you are planning overall, but you get solid performance that doesn't rely on scaling with CF, although Scaling of SLi/CF have somewhat improved over the years.

Good question. I don't think you can do this. Needs to be same card to Xfire,,, gl

I'm fairly certain you can.. It'll just run at the rated speed of the slower card..
