It's been awhile since I oc'd anything. I want to do a CHEAP upgrade on an older setup. It's Abit BX6 rev2 with a PPGA Celeron 366 at 566. Converter is an MSI (693something?) bought about a year or so ago, before Celeron II came out.

Question: Can I simply buy a FCPGA Celeron II 900 or 950 etc. and slap it on the old MSI converter? Will it work for FCPGA? If so, I'd have a $50 upgrade pretty quickly and possible oc of the new chip.

I know I'll need to flash the bios (mine's about a year or so old. Anything else I need to know? My 566 is set to 2.1v. I'll need to reset everything to default/auto settings before I install new chip, right?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

As far as your slotket goes, you need to go to the manufacturer's site and make sure that it supports FCPGA procs. If it does, then you should be able to run up to a 1.1 Cumine Celeron with no problems and also up to a P3 1100E Cumine. Abit's site should have the bios and instructions on how to flash it for you board; it's pretty straightforward.

If your slotket doesn't support FCPGA, then you should be able to buy 1 for around $10 @ mwave.com. They have some generic 1's that they say support Cumine procs.
Good luck with the upgrade.

Yes it should work if your slotket is a revision that will support Coppermine. Check on the slotket. Those MSI Slotkets usually have a cumine jumper.

The MSI 6905 Slocket has to be the "Master" rev 2.3 version. The 1.1 does not support CuMine.

Yes, flash to the latest BIOS. What I normally do is "pre-load" the settings for the new processor, then shutdown and swap it out.

Thanks to all of you guys who responded so quickly. I used to visit other forums to peruse overclocking info, but those forums got ugly and I left a long time ago.

I've been looking for a good forum since. I don't know why I didn't think to try/register with this one sooner. After all, I have used the CPU info at this site since my first oc...300A/450. That cpu is still going strong in another box after what, more than three years?

Oldfart:

Thanks for the info. I checked mine and found that it is an MS "6905 Dual," Rev 1.1. It has vcore settings "Auto" and 1.80 through 2.6 in 0.5 increments. Also has cpu define, 100mhz and 133mhz fsb settings. Am I really out of luck with this one foe fcpga?

That is the old one that does not properly support FCPGA. You need the 2.3 version or a different slocket.

your probly out of luck as the old slotkets did not support FCPGA chips. You should be able to get a slotket from whoever you buy the chip from or from a local comp store for about $15

Usually local vendor won't carry slotket's anymore as they are not produced anymore. Your best bet would be Ebay.

www.googlegear.com has a Soyo slocket listed on their website for $8, I think. Don't know anything about the unit but it may be worth a look.
