This thread is for Dropbox referalls. If you'd like to start using Dropbox, use the links below to signup. Once you signup thru those links, that person will get bonus space on their free Dropbox account and you'll start with an extra 250MB (2.25GB instead of 2GB). Once you have your dropbox account, post your referral link here so other members can use your link also, and get bonus referral space too!
You start your free account with 2GB of space. Each referral gets you 250MB of more space. The maximum amount of bonus space is 8GB, so once you hit your limit, please update your post and remove your referral link - this way as many members as possible can take advantage of some additional space.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, there will be an article about it on the frontpage soon!
Here's my referral link:
*I have 5GB of total space now, and removed my referral code so others could get more*
So far I've earned 1.75GB of the 8GB maximum bonus space possible from referrals. Currently, I have 4GB of Dropbox space and only 180MB free. :(

+1 Dropbox is awesome! I started using this when my daughter went to college, it's how we shared files and pictures to eachother. 2GB of free space is great too!

Updating first post - if you use the referral link, both you and I get 250MB extra. So use the links in here to sign up, and you'll start with 2.25GB!

You're 4 steps away from a 250MB bonus!
The six quests to the right will teach you how to get the most out of your Dropbox. Finish at least five of them and we'll give you a reward!
Ahh I see it now

Hmmm, that's not what their site told me. If your logged into Dropbox, click on the link below and you'll see the following:
https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals
For every friend who joins Dropbox, we'll give you both 250 MB of bonus space (up to a limit of 3 GB)!
Maybe you have to finish the quests first?

I really only use mine for documents and important files. I have a 100MB encrypted file container on there, and a backup of my personal website.
I haven't synced in a while tho, my dropbox installation stopped working a while back and I uninstalled it. Need to get that working again eventually.

<3 dropbox... just recently found it (within the last month) and 2gb of free space is plenty for me. The whole auto sync, online backup is simply perfect, amazing and seamless... it just works so well. Hell its even completely cross platform capable!

08-26-10, 03:05 PM
Yup, I've used it a lot on linux and it works great. The web interface is really convenient for sharing files with people too and they don't have to be dropbox users, and you don't have to email big attachments. I've used it to share things with JoeC when we were transitioning the frontpage over, and I'm currently sharing a folder with the benching team so they can save the info they need there and I can check on it if necessary.
I could really use some extra space

Our sister site windowssecrets has published an article on dropbox, this is their free version:
http://windowssecrets.com/comp/101028
If you subscribe to windowssecrets, you can get more articles like that, except even more complete and detailed. It's really high quality writing they do over there. :)

Yup. :)
I have a question for you dropbox people. I'm thinking about signing up, but does it play nice with windows' file syncing? I have a desktop and a laptop, with a main documents folder on my desktop. I have the laptop set up with windows' sync utility to make that folder available offline. It works great. It would be even more awesome to have it all available on the internet. Can I make dropbox use that specific folder? Also, I want it on my laptop too, but when I'm on my own network, I'd rather just have it sync over LAN with the windows tool than go over the internet with dropbox. Am I gonna run into problems?

I used the Windows sync utility for a while, and I hated it. I would view Dropbox as a Windows Sync replacement or upgrade rather than using both of them. You can sync that folder with Dropbox, but you have to put that folder IN the Dropbox folder. You can't select it independently. You can place the Dropbox folder wherever you like.
Dropbox will sync over LAN if it's available, otherwise it'll use the internet. I've seen it properly sync over LAN between my desktop and laptop.

The only way I know is to share a folder with someone else who has Dropbox. Otherwise, you'd have to give them your username/password so they could log in and download it themselves. It's not really set up as a convenient way to share files.

I have a 7gb file I need to get to a friend. Any ideas?
johan851
11-11-10, 12:48 PM
Thumbdrive? :) You could try to FTP it or, more reliably if you can mannage to connect, torrent it.
I.M.O.G.
11-11-10, 03:20 PM
The dropbox site allows you to give people a public link to a specific file. For example, if I put something in my "public" dropbox folder, I can click on the drop down arrow and then there's an option to copy and paste a link that you can give to anyone.
But dropbox won't help you with a 7GB file unless you pay a subscription to get that much available space. Then depending on the quality of your internet upload speeds, you could have a bit of a hard time uploading 7GB or it could just take quite a while.
Best option would be ftp imo, its the best at transfering large files between one system and another. Bittorent would work, but its strength is with distributed deployment, not 1 to 1 transfers.
I'd setup an ftp server - just an app that runs an ftp service. Install the app, set which folder you want to share, set permissions/users allowed to connect, put the file in that folder, tell the server to run. Set your router to forward port 23 to your pc's internal ip address, tell the other person your public/wan ip address and they can download it with a regular browser, the builtin ftp command in windows, or with their ftp client of choice.
Ok, it sounded simple in my head but I guess it seems like a lot of steps when you write it down. Less complicated than it may seem if you haven't done it, and its what I would do.

Not really. Plain FTP provides no error checking, so you need to either have md5sum on both ends, or have somebody complain that you just gave them a broken zip file :) SSH/SCP could provide checksumming, but I don't know whether it checks each packet, or only after the whole thing is transferred.
I think Bittorrent would be best. It provides a checksum for every piece. It is especially good for large files, regardless of whether they are distributed or not. BitTorrent is the only protocol I know of that can split the checksums into 256KB pieces and say "this 256KB chunk got corrupted in transfer, just re-download that bit", rather than having to re-download the whole 7GB file.
I.M.O.G.
11-11-10, 04:20 PM
Good input, I need to update my perogatives. :D
Hardass, how are you uploading? Using the application or web interface? Either one, the upload would likely take a long time.
But once it gets up there, you can just send someone a link.

That's what I was thinking. It would be slower and less direct, but you could pause/resume, which would be a nightmare with a 7GB file.
petteyg359

It would be slower and less direct
How would it be either?
Uploading to any server is what takes time. If you're downloading at the same time as uploading (as you would be with a torrent), then download time is the same as upload time (time=upload=download), so it is actually faster than uploading and only downloading after the file is fully uploaded (time=upload+download).
A decent Bittorrent client (Azureus/Vuze) can create a torrent with no tracker (DHT only), and make a magnet link from it, which you can simply email to another system, and manually add the first system as a peer. No need for a third party. That's not less direct, that's more direct.

Ah. I was thinking through the use case where there's a tracker in between the peers. That makes more sense.
It's not strictly more direct than FTP, though...if he sets up his system as an FTP server, that's the same two-party connection. FTP would just be a lot more shaky for this kind of thing.
I've FTP'd 7gb files multiple times without any problems. Chances of errors are extremely low. Like 10^-15 and lower (if I remember my comm theory correctly). And I thought tcp/ip has built-in error correction anyways?

TCP/IP just makes sure all the packets get there, and that they're in order. It has some basic checksumming, but it doesn't catch everything, and the larger the transmission, the more chance there is for error. The main issue is connection loss. "Resume" is a glued-on addition to FTP, and doesn't always work, even when the server and client both support it. With a protocol like BitTorrent where things are automatically divided into manageable pieces, you can stop and start any number of times and not worry about losing anything.

I wouldn't worry about the protocol - I'd worry about someone's computer shutting off or an internet connection going out. It would take a really long time over FTP unless the server has a good upload speed.

Did either of you get the 5GB photo thing to work? I've already uploaded 1GB of photos/videos and I'm still sitting at the same amount I was.
I didn't find it very clear in the manner in which we are to upload the photos, so I just put them in my gallery. I'm not getting credit for it so far, so I didn't know if I was just doing it wrong or something of that nature.

The way it works is when you insert Camera/USB stick etc and autoplay comes up you see a option to import into dropbox. You dont just copy it in. I did video's when I ran out of pictures :)
