hi all, i am doing a design degree and for one of my projects i am designing a computer case with and intergrated cooling system for the aim of overclocking.......but i would like to know what things would be important to u in a case design and what other feature would u like it have on it?
please ne comments will be usful....cheers L8rs

Much space, little weight, ready-made holes for water-tubes, ready made blowhole, 120mm fans instead of 80mm ones. Oh and a supercool design

ok ok ....would u like the asthetics in a kida slick....geometric box....with suible detailing....blue LEDs and kewl embossed logos....or a kida crazy cuvey thing thats highly abstract?

Something in between would be very nice. You know maybe black or chrome, with some nice window, lights inside(maybe green instead of the usual blue?). In short it has to be stylish, not too freaky. Too many lights etc. will make it look a little stupid. Something subtle, but modern.

I think the caseshould have a sliding mobo tray that comes right out. An easily moddable case, with plenty of fans for cooling. I say put in a windo in the side, rwith some good lights kinda in an alvove around it, so that you can't even see the bulbds. I would like a kinda angular one, iall in shades of green! well, that's about it for now.

Sliding mobo tray, 120mm fans, and lots of space. My midtower barely has enough space to put in a CD drive, the back of my drives overlap my mobo by a couple inches. Lots of space both front to back and up and down.

which connects would u be interested in, display information....dot matrix display?.......and on a styling side of things are u thinking Sgi type curvy box sort of thing, cazy mac anglpose type base unit Apple page or a geometric box.....

Definitely USB, Audio ports on the front of the case. Modular tooless as possible. I want to get to the pieces parts easily, get em out and new ones in without hassle! Sliding mobo tray a must!

Aesthetically? Chrome would be cool, I think the transparent thing is tired.

three cheers for removable mobo trays! :D i love the "all thumbscrews" approach of my case, along with the light weight. brushed aluminum seems pretty popular at the moment, along with any other color of aluminum (and black is also very big). perhaps hidden drive panels or something of the sort? blindly throwing darts.. :)

All the suggestions so far are good. Personally I am more about functionality than looks. My biggest problem with all Mid/full towers is that they are too narrow! When you have 5 hard drives and 2 CD drives and 1 floppy drive it becomes a problem. My coolermaster case is great but the front intake fans are right infront of the HD's. Yeah it cools them great but does not make for good case cooling. I would love to see a case with 6-7 internal HD bays all the way to the left of the case (If you are looking at front) with 2 80mm fans to cool them. On the right side I would like to have an additional 120mm fan (or 2 92mm's) for case cooling with nothing in the way to obstruct airflow. A dual psu option would be excellent too, stacked one on top of another. Sliding mobo, quick disconnect power/case wires, 120mm blowhole, 120mm exhaust at back. Another trick thing would be to totally isolate the PSU's from the case, enclose them with some sort of hole/gasket deal for the wires. That's my .02

slide out mb tray, 120 mm fan for exaust don't want a bunch of fans though..too much noise. one good fan is plenty if case is designed right. the case i'm using only has a 92mm fan and case temps are 30c. one more thing a little wider would be nice

30C case temp is hot!!! I get 22C.

I agree, I would like an extra wide case, but not a cube looking one, reminds me too much of that odd look GameCube which is stupid, but on the subject:

-Not a regular shaped window, no rectangle, no circle, how about 4 triangles arranged into a square with the bases facing out..

-The idea about a sectioned off area for PSU and Drives is good, have them at the top, then the lower area for the mobo, cards, HD, and etc

-As for case, a uniform exterior, either all brushed, 1 color, or something sleek, like silver with black trim etc etc

-Rail like things on the side to secure wires out of the way and to the wall to help airflow

-A monkey bar like thing in the middle going front to back to mount fans on to blow down to the mobo or up to the exhaust on the top.

-A popup exhaust? Kinda like the porsches... as they speed up the spoiler like thing pops up as they brake to slow down... would be cool to see it open and have light pour out...

-Front.. have it covered, open it up to see drives bays, etc whatever, have some cool looking LEDs, like Red or Blue, bright ones, and a baybus possible to control the fans.

-Easy access panels with thumbscrews..

Ok I know these ideas are some duplicates, but hey, if wolf does it right, we might see this case on the market and we all might get a discount right wolf? Right???

Later.

well actually thats not my case temp it is my motherboard temp.
figured it should be close to the same. only thing I can figure is heatsink fan is blowing heat on sensor???

how about phase change built in to cool whole system not just cpu

Hey guys, how bout brushed stainless steel. Kinda like the new appliances that cost too much! Definetly wider case!!! the space next to my desks have plenty of room to accomadate a wider case. And possibly a completely sealed compartment for the psu, arrange for it to do its job and have sufficient cooling capabilities without affecting the rest of the case. Definitely incorporate some kinda hepa filtering (washable). there's my 2c :o

On a second note, create a case out of one of those little room size refrigerators, there's your cooling and a place to keep the beer w/out having to go to the kitchen!!!

Enough width to have an Eheim 1250 pump inside on the floor without touching the top edges of the pci cards or the case side.

120mm fans instead of 80s. Filters for all intake fans.

A deep metallic silver paintjob with lots of clearcoats. Actually, whatever color, add lots of clearcoats.

A hole in the motherboard tray to access the underside of the motherboard without removing the motherboard. This is for messing with the standoff mounts for 4-hole mount heatsinks/waterblocks.

Sleek, sleek, sleek! Try and stealth as much as possible.

Another thing I thought of while mounting my watercooling setup. I have my radiator in the bottom front of my case with 2 120's doing a push-pull on either side of the rad. To preserve space within the case, I put one fan on the outside of the sheet metal of the case. Since the 38mm thick fan was thicker than the case's bezel, I had to cut a huge square out of the bezel. If the bezel had been 15mm thicker, I could have preserved it's look and drilled some attractive holes in it, or built a nice looking filter holder.

I like 120mm fan mounts front and rear, removable drive bays, rails, efficient use of space, and thick steel. I don't care about weight. I want room for water cooling expansion while keeping the case small.

some features i would like on a case

- mabey some sort of built in sound dampining
( a muffler concept)

- i saw a neat case where the psu rolled up like it was on a hing
so you could get at the mobo better

- i like screwless or the type of thums screws that dont come off the case. everything in my new case is more or less screw less makes quick upgrads much easyer

- some way to manage the wires better

-i personly would like the drives ( cd dvd hdd) farther away from the mobo so theres some room to work( inch or two) in one of my cases the cdrom covers over the ram so anytime i fiddle with it i have to move the cdrom

- this might not be practical but it would be cool to have the pannel slide open mabey have some rails so you can determin witch way it opens. mabey have it on a spring system so it opens by its self slowly ( kinda like a mini van door)

-mabey room for a second psu

- a hook sort of deal on the back to help deal with wire managment.

-for the pci slots my comptuer has a lever that pushs down on all the pci slots so you dont have to screw them in that makes things tons easyer ( ill put a pic in if request)

-no sharp edges

- mabey a drop in air filter port or something so you dont get small bunnies in your system definetly some sort of dust control i hate dusty comptuers

- probably a bult in led or cold cathod , fan bus or not

behold grown men tremble at my MS paint skillz

this is what i ment with the psu

Hmm well now lets see.

I think most of the stuff has been written, so I'll repeat a few I find very important and add a few as well.

Rounded edges (god I hate cutting my self on cheap cases!!)

Mounts for 120mm fans and or 92mm fans (drop those pathetic 80mm fans :D)

Removable MB tray (one of the nest inventions in the computer case research labs!!)

Room for a nice big Rad and pump

I have seen a IBM server where the drive bays twisted out on a hinge very practical!! Other wise just a removable drive bay.

Windows are nice, but make it in a new shape, and maybe tinted.
