I'm making my second WC setup and i need a pump advice...
I'm considering these...
Rio1400 --- 400gph
Mag3 --- 350gph
Eheim 1250 --- 320gph
(i'm using wide copper tubes)

Or tell me some better pump...
The most important for me it must run very cool ( i mean do net get hot while running, cos my other pump fried because it got realy hot ) I really wanna use it as an inline pump not submerged..!!!
Well and it should be quiet....

I got 1 more question...
My last pump made my monitor flick cos of the magnet inside so i had to carry the case realy far from the monitor...
So i wanna know if all pumps are like that???
And tell me the diffence between Direct and Magnetic drive plz..
Thx alot...

is your monitor new or like some years old? maybe its about the monitor, havent heard of that before.

about the pump... i dont think theres a big"quality" difference.

more gph is better and less money is better......

you have to know what is more important to you.

Eheim is a darn fine pump. period. (large though)
Mag 3 is a great pump too, same size as the eheim.Bit it takes some modification to make it leakproof for inline use. Still a good pump for the money.
The Rio, well, I've never owned one, but have heard reports of pump failure (anecdotal, don't know for sure)
MaxiJet makes a great pump, quiet, small and cheap too.

As for the monitor flicker, all of the magdrive style pumps may cause this (eheim may be shielded internally). It's in the way they're built. They use a pressed ferrite rod that is rotated by a magnetic field produced by an epxy embeded copper coil that they are located inside of. Direct drive pumps use a more traditional type of motor, with the pump head attached to it's shaft. Be warned, over time, a direct drive pump may develop leaks around the seal between the motor shaft and the pump head. Iwaki makes the best darn direct drive pump you can buy...period. Look for the 'american made motor' units, they last longer and are stone quiet. (but large. up to 11" long)

To get rid of screen flicker, you can cover the pump with tinfoil and ground it to the case. You may want to mount the relay setup (that turns the pump on with the computer) inside of a metal project box too.

Hope this covers everything...happy cooling!

Just curious, but what mods do you think need to be made to the Mag Drives to make them leak proof? I've used them inline in my aquarium setups and all I did was use teflon tape on my adapters and haven't ever seen a leak in years.

The inlet side likes to crack, causing it to suck air. A hose clamp around this "tube" can prevent it. Mine also sucked air around the pump head o-ring. This was prevented with a little silicone to grease the o-ring.

I'm using the Danner model 2, and it's been a great pump for me. I did do the mods for $.50 and got a pump that's reliable, and bulletproof for the money. It's also darn quiet too.

I'm not 'dissing' them, I like them. It was just a caution based on my own experience.:D

It's the direct drives that have more of a chance to leak, cause the two seperate parts require more seals. It's happened in my outdoor fountain. I replaced it with an Iwaki pump, and it's been running fine for two years now.

I got the WaterAce R106 that does 300GPH at 10 feet straight up :D. Great non-submersible pump, extrodinarily loud though.

I would go for the Danner Supreme Mag pump.

Thank you guys for the replies :) i'll go with Mag drive prolly because it's the same as Eheim but costs 3 times less...Leak MOD is not a problem for me....

I tried almost everything i even made a thick-metal box to cover it and groundet it but it's the same...well anyway i'm gonna be moving this setup to another room anyway soon....:) as soon as i setup my new w/c system....Thx

Diggrr,Please tell me more how Eheim can be shielded internally...what do u mena?does it have a contact on it to connect it to the ground? does it really work?

Eheims are nice. It's the first pump I've used and I'll only go for a bigger one on my next machine in a few years. It gets warm, but not even close to hot. Silent and fast, nice combination. You can replace the inlets/outlets with barbs if you need to. I run 1/2" ID tubing on my brass barbs. No problems.

Well, I've never taken one apart, especially if it works.
But if the manufacturer were to put the copper winding assembly into a thin metal housing, and then into the plastic case, it would be shielded. Attaching the power cords' ground wire to the shield would complete the circuit.
I wouldn't mess with the cord on a working pump, it's just too easy to add a shield and ground it with a piece of copper braid (like desoldering braid). Solid or stranded wire will not make as good a ground for emi as braided wire does.
You can also shield the power wire itself by covering with aluminum furnace tape. It's shiny aluminum foil about 2" wide with an adhesive back. Just use it like a spiral wrap, and ground only one end to the power supply.

The reason I said Eheim's may be internally shielded, is the price is high (making me believe there's more in it than appears) and secondly because I've seen many of our watercoolers put it right under the pci cards with no interference reported.
It's just a guess really, but the evidence seems to follow well.
