View Full Version : Peltier psu Question
I am pondering a 220 watt peltier for the system in my sign but I need a psu. The 220 watt pelt is 15v so I might hook it up to a seperate 250 watt psu and run it off that. My main question is what wires make the psu turn on. Does anyone else have experience running a high wattage peltier form a seperate ATX psu?
Make sure you read the label on that psu. It must be rated higher for amperage on the 12 volt line than the pelt is rated for. My 250 watter supply can only do 9 amps.
To turn it on, you need to cross the green wire in the mobo connector with one of the ground wires in the same connector. You also need to put at least a 1 ohm, 20 watt resistor on the 5 volt line to make the psu output full voltage on the 12 volt side.
Just place it on the red and black from one of the molex connectors.
Honestly though, I'd recommend a power supply that's more suited for this kind of pelt. You can get one for 50-75 bucks at www.peaktopeakpower.com This is sure to be more reliable.
Happy cooling!

need min. 23 amps.... 15v pelts run more effiecent @ 12v. anything after .75 of the volts rated at will just add heat... won't cool any more by the way I do believe these pelts are rated for 16v....so that would be 12v don't worry about volts too much be more consired about amps. It might be possible to get away with using a 400w psu but would need to have something drawing on the +5v add resistor or fan
I would probably have to add 2 more ATX power supplies to run that pelt. I have been looking on ebay so mayby I'll find something good there.

This article is pretty good on linking several psu's for pelt power. I did this, and it works fine, just beware. It's all up to the reliability of the psu's you use.
It's definately a black diamond mod!

using 2 atx psu's is cheap way to go. radio shack has 13.8v 25amp power suppy for $120
Don't worry digger I'm up to the double back diamond mods now. I think I solder stuff on my computer just for fun. I voltmoded my Epox 8K7A just so I could have easy voltage adjustment. The board already went to 2.25v with no mods.
The thing is I am trying to do this pelt system cheep. I cant spend $100 just for a psu. $50 would be pushing it but i really don't want to spend a thing accept for the pelt.

a good peltier setup is expensive thats for sure
You can spend alot of money. I have a Lambda laboratory 20 amp psu that goes for $250.
But I also made one like in that procooling article that gives me 19 amps and cost me nothing. I got the box and the military amp connectors from work. That'll teach them to make me sort through the old junk shelves in the quality tech lab.
The fans run on the 5 volt line as well as having 25 watt resistors heatsinked to the case. It's all professionally built with the best parts their money can buy (except the free AT supplies).:D
