So I bought a new monitor recently, a Dell 3008 WFP 30" monitor. With the resolution of 2560x1600 will I need a cross fire setup to run things at high settings or should I be fine as long as I am running a single version of the latest card?

Is your 4870 a 512 variant or 1gb? I'm thinking a 1gb 4870 should run nicely at that resolution, with medium settings. That resolution will keep the workload GPU bound, which is a good thing, for your CPU. Of course, as cheap as 4870's are becoming... CFX might not be a very expensive upgrade, assuming of course you have all the other components to support it.

At that res, I would say absolutely Xfire cards to run the newest games full tilt. Especially if you are playing modern games and prefer AA (which I doubt is needed at that res). Im a self proclaimed SLI/crossfire hater..........until that resolution. :)

That's up in the resolution range that crossfire/sli really start working well in. That being: Huge!

If you have a 512mb 4870 you might consider selling it and buying a 5850 if you have the cash.

When I said the latest generation I meant currently the 5000 generation. I recognize that my 512 4870 is not enough to power the monitor. The plan with the new monitor was to always have the high end of the most current generation video card. I am hoping I can get by with 1 though instead of 2.

I was hoping that one 5870 will cut it at least for the moment was more the question.

(not selling the 4870 though, I need it for multiple monitors as this brings me to 4 monitors and there is the possibility I may get more later.)

I'll probably be picking a a new card in December, hopefully a 5870 X2 assuming they are out.
