I have ME on this thing now, but the BSOD's and kernal32 errors have become more and more agitating. If cash wasnt a factor (I got loads of that, over-generous parents ;) ) would it be worth upgrading to XP? Any problems with it? Performance?

I'm mainly worried about stability, i've head conflicting reports.

Bottomline, this, or LindowsOS (whenever the hell that comes out..)?

Definately do XP... I used to vouge that it was the best OS Microsoft had made, but now I'm falling back to 2k SP3 again... Anyways, if you think you can handle Linux, you could do Lindows, and that would be the most stable of the 3.

Win2k all the way, baby!
From what (little) I've read of Lindows, I am not really impressed- I'd rather keep Redhat going....

Personally, I think win XP is the "WinME" of NT Kernel Windows: bloated and slow.

I too liked xp at first but I just can't seem to get it running fast enough. My systems seems tto appear like it's a k6-2 350 (my old setup). I don't understand it. It probably has something to do with something I'm doing.

I would say xp over me and 2k over xp unless xp runs well for you.

I have xp running on and ECS k7s5a, 1.4 tbird, gf2mx400, 512DDR.
XP's been very good to me. I kept some of the bloat and rid myself of the rest and am pretty pleased with the results. Win2k also ran great on this system. I have noticed some quirks with XP, but nothing that I couldn't solve and I also had to do some tweaking with 2k. It's very stable and happy now. Both XP and 2k are head and shoulders above 98/ME and a full OEM copy of XP Pro is available off of the web at stores like Newegg for 130-150 with the purchase of any hardware, including something as small as a case screw.

I would go with XP, but upgrade to 384 or 512MB RAM for best performance.

XP with 256MB is not great, but maybe just good enough

Windows 98se (Suckers Eddition)
Windows ME (Mistake Eddition)
Windows NT (Not Terrible)
Windows XP (Hmmm... I don't know yet....)

So far, NT/2K/XP are the ONLY windows OS's I will use....

I'm still waiting to see what other bugs XP has before I try it out on any of my machines. It's still pretty new and there are more and more problems that keep comming up with it, that micro$oft doesn't want to publicly admit to. If you're an OEM system builder and somewhat "try" to keep up to date on the service bulletins, you know what I'm talking about. So far, Win2K and Win98se are the only OS' I would recommend, Win2k being the prefered of the two. Linux, is another option, but if you're a gamer, not really for you.

Winxp is running smothly on 3 systems in my house. Two clean installs and one upgrade install. As some one in the tech support game I am aware of some of the weaknesses in winxp but all of the os's have bugs and weaknesses it is the nature of the buisness we are in. Winxp has a definite dislike of USB devices. It can also cause problems out of the blue with broadband connections that are tough to fix but then so can all other OS's as well

I moved up from ME to XP just this week, ME was the biggest mistake of my computing life and I am glad to be rid of it. I haven't really had time to sort everything out yet, but it seems to run ok, but not as fast as ME did (I moved from a 2000 something to 1706 on 3DMark 2001  ). I blame it on the bloated interface and lack of tweaking. Hopefully if I switch back to 98 interface and then figure out how to tweak XP, it'll be back up to normal.

Other than performance, it seems to be much more stable than ME, haven't had any crashes yet. Plus it's kinda interesting to see the new interface (it felt weird removing My Computer and co from the desktop).

It's really just a matter of preference, but anything is better than ME.

I'd say Win2k is the best overall, but it can't play alot of the older games out there, and for me personally I was getting alot of FPS less in games so I had to go with XP.

Of course I'd say a Win2k/98SE dual boot is the best all around, I just don't like the hassle of rebooting to change operating systems when I wanna play a game.

So XP it is.
