Well I can glady say my 16.6 Gb drive is allmost full..I found the specs on it from Ibm...Good Greef no wonder it takes forever to do tasks...it's only a UMA/ATA 33 I'm really looking into Ibm's 60GB model on the 80GB 120Gxp...Plus Ibm has some good software of their drives...Too bad the drive I have now does not support Temp Monitoring and Ibm has on the new drives at Accustic noise level...you know the sound of hard drives crunching away when you click on something...Well you can bring the nosie level down.. And i'm sure it will slow proformace...But heheh when your up at 3Am still working on someting on the computer any sound will drive you crazy :p.....Anyway seems like 2 good drives...My maxtor is too loud to get another one....

good idea on the maxtors, they are not that good, the ibm deskstars rule....i will never buy a diff drive
Actually if you think the Maxtor's are loud, then think again those IBM Desktar's are rated to 48dBA. I personally don't think any of the lower class drives 40 gig and under excluding IBM are all noiseless brands. I have 20gig and a 15gig drive no sound at all (Quantm and Fujitsu) ....
Well I do like IBM just that their GXP75 I believe or 70 series just sucked!

I'm not talking about the drive beeing loud when it's just spining..I'm talking about seaching for data..Thats when the Maxtor is loud.. All I can say is I can't wait to get Both drives out...Nothing wrong with the Ibm...I might keep the Ibm as a spare drive and keep the New Ibm as the main drive...and maybe do something with the maxtor...oh wait I just thought of it..I will just put it in my mom's computer and use the 2 Ibm's I have...i'm not doing that RAID junk... As I know of now the Ibm I have now is a UMA/ATA 33 5400Rpm....The Ibm I want to get is a ATA 100 7500 I think Rpm's so I wont have any slow downs will I? And Better yet a drive failing on me? People should check their Hard drive's S.M.A.R.T statis more offen..

but its never worked for me...

Don't try to use Ibm's Software on a Maxtor drive...they both may have S.M.A.R.T on them but the Maxtor may not be the same as Ibm's software.

Avoid the 75gxp series IBM. Alot of people had problems. I had to RMA my 45gig after 6 months. I have the 75 gig now and like it. As far as noise, I can't hear it over my black label fan on the CPU. lol

I have a 120gxp IBM Deskstar, and it ROCKS!!!!;)

IBM couldn't sell me another hard drive if they were selling 120 gig drives for a dollar! I have just had the third 30 gig 75GXP go bad on me a few hours ago and just finished running their DFT program confirming that it has gone sour. I just sent the second bad hard drive back a few days ago! After I post this, I have to go to IBM's site and get another RMA for this damn drive. I'm also about to go put my name in on that class action suit against them for these trashy, sorry hard drives.
Don't buy an IBM hard drive! When I bought my drives, the 75GXP was supposed to be the fastest, most reliable IDE drives on the market. What a crock of s**t!
Sorry about the rant, but don't buy an IBM!

Several people have already posted warning away from the 75GXP, but that doesnt mean all IBM drives are bad.

I agree with you...So I heard about the story about the 75GXp drives...So then I wont buy that one..I will get the 120GXp Drives then. I don't care what anyone says Ibm drive kick @ss... Hell I had a old 1984 ibm computer that my aunt got when she used to work at Ibm in New York... computer still worked and so did the hard drive... I can't say about others but that hard drive was HUGE!!
I dunno. I have a 75GXP 20Gig and haven't had problems with the 2 years that I've had it.

I have a 16GP Ibm Drive it's 16.6GB Just found out it's a Ultra-ATA/33 and has a Sustained data transfer rate of
12 - 6 MB/sec and a Rotational speed of - 5400 RPM....now thats why my my stuff runs to fricken slow...I can overclock and all..But I hate waiting for my stuff to load...Will i see a better increase when I get a ATA 100 Drive? which will also be a Ibm.

You'll see a much better transfer rate with a higher areal(sp?) density and faster rotational speed.

What do you mean by higher areal (sp?)?

Higher areal density means that the data is packed tighter on the surface of the disks. your old drive may have 3.4GB per platter and 5 platters, where the new drives have 20 or 40GB per platter on 1 or two platters. witch yields more speed via higher rpm's and more data moving under the heads per rpm.

The point I'm trying to make is that the drives didn't immediately go out. When I bought these drives, the 75GXP was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread; only a couple of months after I bought them did all the reports of failures start cropping up on the net. If you really want an IBM drive, then get a 60GXP. They have been out a while and so far, have been pretty reliable. I wouldn't get the 120GXP yet though; it's too new and problems with them might develop over time, just like what happened with the 75GXP. I've since started buying Maxtor. The one I have in my P3 1.26S rig is running with no problems on a 40 mhz pci bus with no problems. It is quieter than the 75GXP drives and has just as fast as a data tranfer rate as other 7200 rpm drives, and is an ATA133 drive so that if I add an ATA133 card later, will give me even higher burst rates.
I have an older IBM 7200 rpm ATA33 DTTA, 14.4 gig in my secondary box and it's been stone cold reliable. That's why I decided to buy the 75GXP drives when I did.
