So far I've only had experience with the Sennheiser HD 280 and the Grado RS2i as far as headphones go. I like the HD 280's because they are comfy and have detailed sound... the Grados I like for the overall listening experience on a wide range of music types.... but I find them lacking as far as detail goes in the mid range. I want something that can bring more detail to this certain genre of music.... artists such as...
Linkin Park
Metric
Sia
Snow Patrol
The Veronicas
Any suggestions of what to look out for? Price range being anything below $500
EDIT: Added bonus if they are comfortable :D

500 dollars for HEADPHONES!!! you could get some SWEET bookshelfs and a receiver for that price!

And those bookshelves and receiver will sound like crap compared to even 200$ headphones.
I have been out of the LATEST loop for awhile. But I myself would definitely look at some Denon D2000, Beyerdynamic dt990-2005 (and DT770), and also Audio Technica ESW9.
I personally would get the Denon's, possibly with the popular Markl mod. I have heard the Markl modded ones, and wow, worth the extra bit of cash. What he does is replace the stock earpiece with a wooden one with extra stuffing and padding for much bigger soundstage and strong mids to lows. Really good cans for the cash.
Oh, and to add Beyerdynamic makes AMAZING headphones for bass. I mean, bass that feels like you has just been raped by a subwoofer, but to the head. Really insane, but TIGHT and clear. Excellent if you want that cranium destroying level of bass, but only when you want to feed it that much.
Audio Technica is the only one I mentioned that I have never listened to personally, but I know many, many people who have used it and loved it.
I am definitely not the best source for 250$+ cans, but if you want to get really serious beyond what I reccomended, check out www.head-fi.org. Tons of info there.
Try looking at the Senn HD600/650, you need something strong to drive them, but they sound good and are comfortableish.
As Shard says, the Beyer DT880/990 are also very good and very comfortable.

I can't really pull off speakers in my current living condition (roommates, etc..). And for the most part I prefer headphones over speakers anyday.
Thanks for the feedback guys, I think I'll look into the Beyerdynamic side.

Question on the HD 650's.... would the Xonar Essence STX Amp be enough to drive them?

FWIR, the STX should be able to drive them easily.

more channels doesnt mean better sound quality. those aren't even in the same zip code as the kind of cans he's lookin for.
I wish i had the opportunity to experience some high end headphones. I've been rockin a pair of koss ur-40s for like 8 years now.

^^If you're looking for some budget cans... I recommend the HD280s right away. If you amp them properly they have a very detailed bass to them. Not to mention they sound extremely detailed. I think I got mine around 3 years ago for around $80.

right now if i were to spend any money on phones, it would be in building a cmoy amp.
I just did some reading on head-fi and it seems these are in the ballpark of HD212s. I'll add that my koss's have been on a 3 day walking tour through hell, and still hold together and keep on kicking.
but really, I have so many things that i can sink a TON of money into... like a 27 year old chevy, or even the chevy's gas tank lol. owned it over a year and never once actually topped it off.

PM me if you need any help setting it up, I may be able to answer questions. I've built my own and it works fine.
I PMed you my friend.
Get Razer Barracuda 5.1 headphones , with 4 speakers drivers in each cone.
stereo HP's are soo 1999 . gl
Please, stop posting this rubbish. I'm surprised you haven't been reported for SPAM. We KNOW razer cans suck, and we're obviously more demanding of our tech. Razer can't make a good ANYTHING.
Can the STX really drive HD600/650 to thier full potential?

According to quite a few threads on head-fi, yes.

I really like my Sennheiser 650's. What are you using to drive those cans? I have mine hooked up to Onix SP3's that are still holding up quite well.

Another suggestion I havei s what I'm getting: The Grado SR325i's. They're a different sound from the wooden grado's. Add in the 45$ bagel pads and you're set.

I don't have the 650's, yet anyway. If I were to get them, I would be driving off of my Xonar STX. I compared the STX amp vs my homemade cmoy and the difference is night and day. As for an actual quality headphone amp vs the STX... I can't say.... I have nothing to compare on.
