I just got my Power Supply in and all wanted to know if there was a way to test out my case fans with out the MOBO, I dont have the mother board yet, and I did plug up the fans on the PS and plugged it into the wall, but I guess there is no way of testing the case fans with out the MOBO is there?

You have to "jumper" the PSU inorder to run without anything else plugged in. Just wait though...is there a serious need to test fans before your board gets here?

No there is no rush, just wanted to know if I have any defective parts right now is all, but really no rush.

But I did get this PS (CoolerMaster Silent Pro M 850W)
because I think a 1000W may be a bit too much for my config.

One question I have for ya about my current gaming rig config that is in my sig. Do you think that this config would work good like is PC1280 good or should I kick it up to PC1600. I think I should stay with PC1280 because of the price differance.

DDR3 1600 is the 'standard' so to speak. I wouldnt go lower.

I know exactly why you are asking this question because I was looking for the answer this morning. I just bought the CM Sniper Case and I untangled the rats nest of wiring that goes to the fan controller and the three fans. I think I figured it out after reading several posts at CM's forums. The instructions are no help.

I also wanted to test and see that the fans and the controller worked due to several postings around the web indicating that these controllers were, in many cases, defective or cross wired. I have the HX850 Corsair PSU. I was going to simply plug in the daisy chain to the PSU but then I thought better of it.... this is my first build and I did not want to fry something ... I think I'll skip the paper clip solution to my curiosity.

I also plan a i7 920 D0 but I am going to use the P6td... the Rampage seems like overkill for my purposes.

I have a quick question for you.... did you get the black edition? If so do you have 2 spare led connectors and 2 spare molex connectors on the daisy chain or one of each? The old sniper appears to have had 2 of each but my Black has only one LED spare and 2 molex spares (one for a fan and one for a 4 pin device)..

(ohh ... hello to everyone at OC forums.... this is my first post )

The process is very simple. On the 20/24pin plug that comes off of the psu, there is one green wire. To turn the psu on, simply use a short wire to bridge the green wire with any of the black ground wires. Older psus sometimes will not turn on unless there is an electrical load, such as hard drives, fans first attached. That mostly applies to very old units.

You have the original sniper. Looks good. I see you put that Corsair water cooler up front. I had not seen that done before. It would be interesting to see what the temps are in that case.

I just got my case yesterday. The wiring is all over the place. I finally segregated everything and I have 1 spare led connector and a spare molex fan connector. It seems normal but I wanted to compare with your case. Have you looked at the controller wiring yet?

Yes I have taken it apart I was planning to spray paint it black but decided that I really don’t need to, I have taken a close look at the controller board and did notice that the sata cable connection was a little loose so I just basically pushed all the connections back in firm and tight. The only thing that I have painted black was the HD bays. And I have read reviews that some one had a problem with the controller board too, that every time he touch the top side metal where the power button was located the computer would auto re-boot, that would tell me that there was a cable short on the controller board, but my controller board looks good all the IC connectors are in and looks protected. If there was a minor problem with the controller board it would seem to be an easy fix with a soldering kit.

A power supply tester will let you run the fans for at least brief periods (5-10 minuts for Hong Kong cheapies) and give some indication the power supply is in order.
Testers start with LED indicators and go to digital voltage readouts.
Some of the cheap ones $4 may need plug jiggling to work, some are fine.
