I did the mod to my normal cd drive, but it uses a big 5mm led. The burner has a little bitty thing that i cant figure out how to remove or where to sodder the replacement on. Anybody do this mod, and if so, HOW?
you can order the smd leds from jameco.com but they don't have blue ones! :(

Actually i was planing on using red for the burner, but the problem still remians of removing the old one, and attaching the new one.
well turn it on and test with a multimeter to find out which is the positive and which is negative. you can take it off with a soldering iron. putting one back on is tough since the entire thing is only like 2mm. I think you could/should order one and see how they attach to the circuit board. also get the correct voltage too.

I really dont know how to sodder this thing though, it doesnt seem to have any pins on it, it certainly doesnt poke though the PCB. Maybe its just little contacts. If thats the case id probably be lucky to get a new one attached, but il look at it.

Of course, I'm not looking at your CD drive right now, so I don't know exactly what I'm talking about.
Is it possible just to clip the wires coming from the exsisting LED and solder the new one to the wires from the old one?
If you screw up, all you'll lose is the CD burner LED.
try replacing the little clear plastic with a red plastic and see if that makes it red. Also use a marker on the LED too.

Thats not a half-bad idea. I might just take a red sharpie to the led and cover tonight.
post pics when you are done :)

Sorry, no camera. Il tell you about it though.
Only problem is that its a bicolor LED, green when reading, orage when burning. Too bad i cant get blue when reading, red when burning, that would be cool.
