Welcome all!
So what is the goal of this whole contest you ask? Well, I'd like to say the goal is to blow the doors off Team China, But since that will be a near impossible feat to accomplish in a 2Wk Period, the Goal is to get to 30MIL Total Points.

SCREW IT! We're gonna blow Team China's doors off!

I just had a look at our overtake stats and at our current rate we'll take them in 41.4 days. Since I see our RAC going WAY up, and theirs seems to be slowly dwindling.
I figure by the end of November we'll take em no problem!
I really didn't expect things to start ramping up at such an early date, and definitely not to rise so quickly. WOW!

Here's where we sit currently:

Here's a pic of the MC-TDX I donated to the contest. It has the metal, univesal mount, which is drilled for everything up to i7. Also included is a rethreaded TR backplate which the 6-32 studs will now screw in to for mounting on LGA775. I used this waterblock for around 4-5 months on the PH II system in my sig before I found a great deal on a Fuzion V. 1, which is on that system now. Anyways, here's the waterblock and extra mounting stuff:

I've used one of these, and it was a great block for 775.
The addition of the back plate and metal top is really nice!
Thank you mud.

Wow, lots of registered contestants already!

Some familliar faces and some new. Awesome!

Again, stay tuned for more prizes. I plan to add at least one more b4 the end of the contest. Hopefully b4 it starts, so I can double my RAC b4 giving it away! ;)

Well, I'm glad I started my machines early as they are ramping up the RAC real well. I just passed you for 2nd place in RAC, bad. :p

I might be able to fire off another quad when I get back in from offshore for the contest too. But that won't be until the middle of next week.

Hey bad, I don't know if you've noticed 2 things yet, so I'll state them now.

First, if you look at the stats on the BOINCstats page (http://boincstats.com/stats/team_graph.php?pr=rosetta&id=230), we are right at 100k ppd right now on daily production. :salute:

Second, as part of being the point-***** I am and checking my stats ;) , I noticed that on our member's page there (http://boincstats.com/stats/user_stats.php?pr=rosetta&st=0&ti=230) that Pixie is now getting into serious production mode. :comp:

Let's bring it on, team!:grouphug:

BTW, you will notice that I.M.O.G. pestered iNet enough that they finally gave us some new smileys to play with too. :D

Oh yeah, I noticed. On both accounts. Personally I prefer Boinc all Project Stats (http://www.allprojectstats.com/po.php?projekt=7) I like the interface better.
If you look at anyone's stats, typically their points per day will be greater than the RAC itself. The actual points produced are what I used in my scenarios and calculations when drawing up the contest rules and for when I do my status updates. Since our RAC other team's RACs change all the time, overtake predictions are extremely hard to do, and often have to be revised on a weekly or daily basis though.

PS speaking of Production Mode, I'm coming for you! 4.2GHz and CPU preference set to "in use" mode for some TRUE 24/7 crunching power.
Should we make a a friendly announcement in the FAH and SETI forums re: the Harvest? I went looking and didn't see one.

Forum wide announcement and Main Page announcement made on the 1st, albeit not too visible. I should have asked IMOG to make it green or red. Oh well.

Absolutely. If anyone would like to promote the contest in their respective team forums, please do. I see no harm in it, especially as we can also help them when it comes time for their events. Thx shivas.

My RAC is simply a flash in a pan. It'll be gone (or drastically cut) before you know it. But It sure is fun to put some distance between us and VTC. Man, those guys are rocking! Hopefully, their RAC will take a nosedive when the holiday season starts.

When does Thanksgiving start again? :p

Anyway, all rigs switched to R@H except for 2. I have some leftover WUs from the Gauntlet that needs finishing. I switched to F@H and forgot all about them. Man, they have very long due dates. I was hoping they would've been recycled by now. :p

I don't know what scheme Rosetta uses for RAC but if it's anything like SETI then we've still got a big increase coming. We're showing an RAC of ~84K right now but BOINCStats has us at a DAC* of 97K and growing. With the SETI RAC equation it takes about 2 weeks for a machine to start winding up and another week or so to hit full stride. I originally started posting the DAC so that any changes will show up sooner. As time went by I found that DAC was close to a week ahead of RAC, not perfect but a fair reflection. Rosetta may calculate RAC differently, though - the SETI equation is a monster that must have been a nightmare of a CalTech mathematician. :p

*DAC is a term I coined for BOINCStats "Credit/week" divided by 7, which yields a Daily Average Credit over the past week.

baditude_df
11-17-09, 10:55 AM
Daily Production(Daily Average Credit) from what you describe, and RAC in the Rosetta World sound like they would be pretty darn similar, if not exactly the same as Seti then.

As a data point to this discussion, when I crunched in the Gauntlet this year, my RAC peaked around 19K RAC. In Rosetta, I probably won't break 11K with these same rigs. So there's definitely a difference somewhere.

As a side note, my two Win7 Pro x64 quads are cranking out 500 RAC more than they did with Win2K3 32bit. In fact, you can see it in my stats now: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/hosts_user.php?userid=284352&show_all=0&sort=expavg_credit (Two are clocked at 3.4, one at 3.6, with the 3.6 being one Win7)

Anyone else finding Win7 x64 is a better crunching OS?

hokiealumnus
11-17-09, 02:19 PM
It's better than XP 32-bit, I can tell you that much. Still not as good as Linux (at least with F@H, never crunched Rosetta in Linux and it's not on any systems here presently).

muddocktor
11-17-09, 02:21 PM
I just cranked up a Q6600 system for the contest and 30 minutes after firing it up the damn D4 pump on the system crapped out and started making some awful noises. Luckily I had a spare D4 and just brought the system to the kitchen and pulled the pump out of the case and changed the pump motors out without having to take the housing loose from the tubing. After swapping the motors out and replacing the little bit of water lost doing that, I have the system back up and crunching some Rosie units again. And I swapped my Mac Mini over to Rosie too.

What about the WU's? That would be my first guess right off the bat. But maybe I'm way off base there as I know nothing about Seti other than it is a BIONC based application.

I am crunching Windows 7 x64 RC1 (7100) and this 950 at 4.2GHzHT is pulling 4000RAC by itself and rising fast. I have no reference though, since I have only ever used Windows7 x64 with this 950 (or any i7 for that matter).

Anyone else finding Win7 x64 is a better crunching OS? The difference is the optimizers available for SETI crunching. If you had been running only the base SETI app you wouldn't have chalked up nearly the RAC you did. AFAIK no project has code to match the optimized SETI apps with CPU specific routines and all that goes with them. From what little I've read Einstein comes closest to SETI only because the project leaders there update their app frequently and attempt to take advantage of SSE et al as much as possible ...

It's the optimizers, like QuietIce said. Seti's work units grant more credit, on a credit per time crunched ratio, because of this. Some are optimized so efficiently for SSE3, that they grant MUCH more credit. A Seti AstroPulse (or AP) WU, grants almost double the credit compared to an already optimized MultiBeam WU (normal), using the credit granted/minutes crunched ratio. Granted, a single WU will take 10-13 hours on a 4ghz overclocked i7 thread, and up over 48 hours on some rigs; but the credit payout is quite worth it (usually 1200+ credits per AP WU). As of late they are pretty hard to come by though.
From what I've read, Rosetta does not utilize the SSE instruction sets, so optimizing is next to impossible.

drshivas
11-18-09, 09:18 AM
Ah, makes sense, QuietIce and nzaneb. I forgot about that I optimized when I ran the Gauntlet. I wonder if Rosetta will ever consider using such instruction sets. I guess the project would have to grow in such a way that they would have no choice but to write new code to take advantage of such instruction sets.

SETI@Home doesn't use the advanced instruction sets at all - it's all done by 3rd party. The guys over at Lunatics (http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php) and Crunch3r (http://calbe.dw70.de/) (Alex Klein? from the AK_v8 SETI optimizer) are responsible for most of them and have done a great job over the years! All it takes for Rosetta to have optimizers is for someone to sit down and write them. If Rosetta attracts enough lunatics ;) I'm sure we'll eventually see Rosetta optimizers ...

Just for clarification
When i have installed boinc it starts and i don't have to do much more about it than leaving my computers on
Is this a correct assumption or ?

baditude_df
11-20-09, 12:36 PM
Pretty much. As long as those machines are connected to the internet, and you have installed BIONC, connected to the project and chosen a team, you should be crunching away.

However, I do not see you anywhere in the team roster: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/team_members.php?teamid=230&sort_by=expavg_credit&offset=0
This tells me that you have either not connected to the rossetta@home project, or you have not chosen Overclockers.com as your team.
Please PM me if you require any help with this.

My pleasure. I'm quite pleased with the way things have turned out.
I donate to charities every year. Typically I'll split evenly between two.

Last year was The Canadian Cancer Society, and the Burn Unit at a hospital here in Calgary.

This year it's Prostate Cancer by way of "Movember" where everyone grows mustaches to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer, and raise money.
And the other, I have decided, is to sponsor a Rosetta Event here at OCF.

I suppose I could have written all that in the event intro. Anyway. so far they have both proven to be a pretty fun way to contribute to good causes.

I'll be adding my trusty Foxconn Bloodrage GTI X58 LGA1366 Motherboard to the prize pool!
A great way for someone to get into i7! Complete with latest OC BIOS and full compliment of my OC Profiles to get you started! :)
This board has been the platform for all of my benching, crunching and testing for the last 6 months or so, and now it's time to try something else. I figured instead of putting it up in the classifieds, I'll give it away to one of our lucky contestants!

Also, I keep smuggling tasks back to my offline desktop using my laptop, which gives the CPU tasks, but I haven't found a way to fool my laptop into fetching tasks for my desktop's 4850 X2, so it's been idle for quite some time now. Any solutions?

Rosetta doesn't currently support GPU folding. Apparently it's not as useful for the type of calculations Rosetta does. Using GPUs currently has two main problems for R@H, the first is the major rewrite of the code to support them (or waiting for cards to support the code) and the other is the memory bandwidth. Currently Rosetta requires a certain amount of memory per process and the cards can't effectively handle it.

You can check out this (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=5023) and this (http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_what_is.html) for more info.

11-26-09, 07:21 AM
GPU folding isn't that old, (I remember, back in the day, if you wanted folding to use 2 cpu's, you ran 2 instances)

From what I understand, (iirc, from when I started Rosie) the code is long and complicated, that's why there are no optimizations. I would assume that's why there isn't a GPU client yet.

Baditude, I wasn't crunching for the prizes (Rosie has got all my cpu power anyway, lol) As it is, it took a friendly nudging PM for me to sign up for the contest. However your trusty x58 did raise my eyebrows.

My old DP Opty was fired back up last week. As long as it doesn't eat another hard drive, it'll crunch. (last IDE drive I own, and it's only 10gb. lol)

Or I could finally put the old girl out to pasture. :D
It's been crunching DC projects since I bought it used, like 6 yrs. ago. At the time the P4 was Intel's top dog, the board doesn't even support dual core procs.

It wouldn't eat drives if I wasn't so cheap and wanted to invest in new ram for it.

I wonder, why does it then check for GPUs on start up and have that option "Use GPU while computer is in use". A typo, and just a generic host hardware check?
Ah well, if it can't use it, then that solves my problem, seems a bit of waste though.
*Edit: I did a search on the subject, also found another forum with a penguin in it. :)
Fairly interesting read.
Also, with only 42 entries so far, assuming not many more people are going to sign-up, and 8 prizes, the odds aren't as bad as I thought as long as everyone wasn't like Pixie racking up the entries with monstrous crunching power. :P

Thanks for the offer:thup: (thanks also for a couple of other offers I've had from other members) The only reason this rig is still running is I did have 1 last IDE drive. I even had to wipe Win98 of of it. lol

Eventually it will finally get retired (permanently), but if the team could use the points...:salute:

For instance, the last BIOS for this board I think is dated '03. It does predate dual cores. Mudd, you might remember it as SM-6 from along time ago and elsewhere.

By the way, if someone wins a prize, are they then eliminated from the drawing pool, or are they retained and allowed a chance to win again?

baditude_df
11-28-09, 04:47 PM
1 prize Max. There will be 9 individual names drawn from a randomized pool of the entries. Winners will be announced in this thread in random order, so everyone knows who the winners are, and each winner will be PM'd through these forums in order from first to last. #1 will have first pick of prizes, #2 second and so on until all the prizes are spoken for.

QuietIce
11-28-09, 07:02 PM
Ahhh, it's good we can take our pick. While all the prizes are great for someone, for others they're almost useless. For example, it's not much good to have a great water block if you don't have everything else it takes to make it work. In my case I haven't got much use for Intel parts ... ;)

baditude_df
11-28-09, 07:59 PM
Yes, and it is pretty much inevitable that at least one winner will wind up with something they can't make use of(not right away anyhow). It's unavoidable really. At the very least, a prize that can't be used can be sold to offset something the you do need.

This is why I like gift certificates to places like Petra's on Performance PC's. You can choose what you want, and EVERYONE needs or wants something that is carried at those e-tailers.

Bobnova
11-28-09, 11:49 PM

I would think that we'll pass DSL Reports real soon anyways, just on our momentum from this contest. And for you all that hadn't run a BOINC project before, you should really switch your boxen over about a week before the start of the contest to get everything running smoothly and your RAC climbing hard. Also, de[pending on the project, you can have a quite large buildup of credit pending (Seti more-so than Rosetta) which can get stabilized by starting a bit early.

muddocktor

Or more, to tell the truth. But in 2 weeks or so, you should be getting close to your max RAC. This is more so in Rosetta than Seti, since you don't have to have a wingman process the same work unit for you to get credit. I've had over 50k in pending credit with Seti in the past and it can take a month or so for your RAC to stabilize in Seti.

This is the way I do it, but running GPU clients, handicaps your CPU production a bit. No a huge amount, and nothing to really be worried about. The fact that you would consider leaving your CPU's with us is very much appreciated.

Entries will be tallied and randomized tonight at midnight. Draw will be made, then winners announced(in no particular order) in this thread tomorrow (Dec-1st.). After than each winner will be contacted via PM in these forums in order from 1st to 9th, to choose their prize.
Remember, the randomization process ensures a chance that even a single entry contestant could come out in the #1 position, even though odds are heavily against.

I really like how boinc works, it's very nice and simple. Beats FAH all to hell.

I tend to agree with this. I do like the efficiency of the console clients for F@H though.

I will probably keep Rosetta running on my main rig and put F@H back on my GPU folder.

11-30-09, 05:40 PM
Yes, many of us [even myself(2*GPU's)] will be helping out with the F@H event which means our team RAC is going to take a drastic turn downwards. Every little bit of help we can get to make sure teams like HardwareBG ROSETTA Team @ BOINC, MacOS X Users and VTC don't pass us during that time would be much appreciated. Thank you Soul.

RAC of 677.77 puts you in the <1000 category with 3000pts required per entry. 8933 total points right now will likely turn into 9000+ points by midnight which means 3 entries. At least 2 anyway.
Not bad seeing as you started so late in the contest.

In the future, especially for these short run challenges, you might consider using the Credit/week column instead of RAC. Like SETI, Rosetta RAC takes f o r e v e r to get wound up while Credit/week is a real-time measure of performance.

Just a thought ...

In what regard? Within the framework of this contest, I'm not sure it would make much difference one way or the other unless a person was somewhere close to their maximum in terms of RAC. I'll have to look into it further, and maybe the next contest could be restructured to accommodate that.

I was just thinking how people like to see quicker results. You and I are used to the delay - we know it's just part of the project and accept it. That's more difficult for people who are doing something like this for the first time, especially younger people who see it more like a score in a game rather than long-term effort.

Aah - maybe it's just my old age showing itself today ... :p

I am think I will end up splitting my resources between R@H and F@H... I am looking at Micro-ATX Atom 370 MBs that have a PCIe slot... Maybe use the CPU for rosetta and drop a decent x16 graphics card in them for F@H..... Rosetta seems to do really well with ANY CPU, so I may buy a few of these systems around tax time ..... Hmmmm.......

Some of us do crunch Rosie full time.. I shuttled some SETI for Rosetta to help the team - now I've put the same amount of work to use Folding, to help the team. By next month I'll be back to SETI & some Einstein as usual.

Still got a few computers running Rosetta, the ones that are on windows and hence wouldn't make a different in FAH anyway.

So if i haven't gotten a pm yet, does that mean i didn't win? Or are you waiting for a response from Pixie before you PM #8?

Again, you can go up to the first post on this page, click the link "entrant accessible" and follow the instructions to verify that you were entered into the draw, how many entries you had and whether or not you were a winner.

And yes, I have to wait for each winner to get back to me b4 I PM the next as it is a first drawn first pick format.

I think that would be best. I know people have busy life's but they cant expect you to wait to long. If you where to wait it could be a month before you even know what to send.
For the people that might get bumped you must realize its not fair for the others after you to wait so long. It does stink but suck it up you had a chance.

Mud crunched a boat load of WU's for us during the contest. I felt kind of sad about it really. I think we both knew it could happen though.
Not only do you have to get drawn, but you definitely want to be drawn somewhere near the top to make sure you get something you need/want.

bad, since I'm back in, give me a PM about what your plans are with the block and we'll arrange something there.

P.S.: And I'm still crunching a boatload of wu's for Rosie still; have 3 machines still crunching Rosetta. But I have one of those down right now while I figure out what's up with it. I rebuilt my daughter's 940BE system in a HAF922 case and since I got it back together this evening I've been having stability problems with it. Temps are looking good running OCCT after backing it down to 3400 and completing an OCCT run. But that's 400 MHz off from where it was at before the transfer.

Yep, I definitely noticed. And I'm glad you are. While still slowly dropping, we're still seeing enough RAC generated by members like yourself, that we're at ~86K 20 days after the end of the contest.
