Looking at running a VM Ubuntu client. Im only getting ~250ppd using the classic client...
Not sure which F@H client I need to download for VM Linux. Ive already downloaded Ubuntu and VM Ware Server.
The guide I see in the sticky section talks about running 2 VMs. Would this be the same as running 2 instances of F@H? Or is this required for multi core systems?
Thanks and sorry to be such a noob...
The guide needs updating. THe hot ticket for VMs is now VMware Player 3.0.0. Changes in FahCore_a2 version 2.10 combined with Players ability to run on 4 cpu cores rendered the run 2 VMs advice obsolete for 4 core and less machines.
You need to download the Linux SMP client. Sydney has a good guide for a Linux installation.

9.10
Open places, navigate to FAH directory, right click on fah6, properties, permissions, allow executing file as program, close.

Trying that now.
EDIT:
That didnt seem too work. still getting "cannot execute binary file"
You did cd to the fah directory before typing ./fah6?

Im downloading Ubuntu 9.04 now and will try that.

Doh!
Nope 32 bit...
:bang head
Had me mystified for a while. At least we know what the issue is.
Yeah, you need 64-bit to run SMP client.
Also, at the moment I recommend 9.04 for maximum performance.

loading 9.10 64 bit now.
Syndey's recommendation is correct.
However, Snake is running in a VM so he'll be running the GPU in Windows and won't be affected by the 9.10 video driver issues and he's probably got 9.10 loaded by now anyway. He might as well try it.
In my testing, I found kernel 2.6.31 (9.10) to be ever so slightly faster than 2.6.28 (9.04) on native Linux SMP. In 5 9.10 installs, I've yet to have one that was slower than previous versions. However, others have reported serious performance issues. So, if you have any problems with 9.10 (post your performance so we can see how it compares) create a new VM load 9.04 on it and move your fah directory to it and continue. You'll then have the opportunity to see first hand which is faster.

ok I get to the point where I need to type ./fah6 -smp -verbocity 9
Bad Arguement: -Verbocity

Once again... Your right it works fine.
I assume Fahmon cant monitor Linux VM's?

Of course it can, it fahmon even runs under Linux.
HFM.net is better though ;)

ok I have the F@H client running in VM. Can I have Fahmon monitor it from Windows? Or would I need to set it up in Ubuntu?
I recommend setting up a samba server on your ubuntu vm, then mounting it in Windows.

ok Im trying the HFM.net
I downloaded the HFM file do I need to extract it in Ubuntu or Windows? And to where?
ok Im trying the HFM.net
Ubuntu doesnt like the command sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Wait, what happens when you do that?
Also, weren't you going to monitor in windows?

Well I figured I would try out the HFM.net
Will that monitor in windows or in Ubuntu?
EDIT:

Since you have Windows, it kind of makes sense to install the monitoring program in windows. Both HFM and FAHmon are easier to install in Windows. If you're going to run a gpu client, opening the VM window to view the monitoring program will slow the gpu down a lot.
Player lacks the option to set ungrabbed priority to low, so you should add priority.ungrabbed = "idle" to your .vmx file (vmware configuration file)
That error happens because the .exe file you are opening doesn't exist, did you extract the HFM client to that location?
Als, what ChasR said ^

added screen shot.
Ill just be running the CPU client as I am running onboard graphics.
Well I have both Fahmon and HFM downloaded. Just not sure of the directory I need to point them to to monitor.
Thanks for all your help!
Edit. Not sure how to extract it to that location. I dont even see that location in windows....
Also I do not see a .vmx file in the VMplayer folder

well the SMP client is working fine.
Just cant get HFM or Fahmon to monitor it.

Everything is working!
I have HFM running in Ubuntu as well as the F@H SMP client.
So far im at 1205ppd
I guess this is good...
Thanks for everyones help!
It OK, but a $35 - $50 dollar video card would add over 4000 ppd to your output.

Well Im on the same WU but at 2005ppd.
The A2 Fix helped as well.
EDIT: I dont think Ill be adding a GPU to this rig. If I did it would need to be pretty silent and have an HDMI output.
Now on my other rig I was thinking about upgrading the GPU. 8600gts XXX is kinda outdated.

I think if more people knew this we could seriously boost our team PPD. Any way of contacting the team members with 1000-3000 ppd and seeing what their setups are? Possibly suggesting a $50 card for 4k ppd increase?

I get the same TPR note where it says if I update that file I might see a performance increase. How do I do this?
You can't do anything about the tpr file. Stanford will be doing something about it soon.
