Ok I read a few posting about phase change cooling here and also looked up someones homepage from the board with a nice instruction. But they are still a few facts left I'd like to know.

How much energy (watt) does one of these compressors need?
How loud is the whole system ? (Compared to normal air cooling)
Where can I buy a compressor ? (If I don't get one from an old freezer)
At what temperature does freon start to boil?

I hope you can help me guys.

Sorry for my bad english but I'm from Germany and sill learning.

Most compressors I saw take about 240watts of electricity, but I am sure you could find one that takes less energy.

About the same as a fridge, but alittle bit louder since most of them are not boxed in.

I was able to get one from the local junkyard, but you can try local hardware stores.

And I dont have the answer to the last question, but if your planning to make a system, you probably won't get a hold of freon, r134a seems to work good (and i dont know the boiling point for that either:( )

hope this helps

There are no simple answers to your questions because it is not simply a question of compressing a gas and then allowing it to boil.
Refrigeration is a complex thermodynamic environment designed around specific refrigerants. Freon is a generic term for the family of gases of which there a number and each has different thermodynamic charactaristics. The most commonly used one at the moment is R134A. To understand the system I suggest going to your local library and getting out a book on the principles of refrigeration.

Your English is great - wish I had even 10% of your multilingual skills.

Ok ... thx guys !!!
Can someone please post a link to a hardware shop where I can get a compressor ?

I just learnd that the vapochill system uses the "Danfoss BD 35" compressor. If someone has a good idea where I can get one post please.

My english is a bit better that normal because I'm an exchange student in IOWA at the moment ... getting better and better every day ... lol ..\

Where are you going to school??? My girlfriend is at Iowa State and I have several friends that go to the University of Iowa. Perhaps we could have a beer some time... My german is terrible (3 years in High School that I have mostly forgotten, but it's always cool to meet people from around the world)
Peace

All depends on your AC supply friend

240v @ 240w = 1 amp
110v @ 240w = 2 amps

Current (amps) = voltage divided by wattage

phase cooling facts (prepared them as I have plans to build a phase cooled comp and a recently bought compressor idling in this messy room!):

--domestic compressors function as positive displacement pumps: they take a fixed volume of vapor, compress it to a set pressure relationship and put it out to condenser.

--Because of this the quantity flowing depends on evaporator's pressure.

--The pressure in evaporator (boiler) (and so evaporator's boiling temp) depends on coolant load and the equilibrium between valve or capilar output and compressor sucking.

--pressure in condenser side needs pressure output from compressor but finally what controls the working pressure of capilar is the vapor pressure of condensing coolant in condenser.

--you need a condenser capable of condensing all the flow and also dissipate ,in additon, most of the heat that turns out from compressor work (you do not want this part to be the bottleneck).

so finally it goes this way :
coolant condensing pressure and capillary flow carachteristics must balance with evaporator pressure and compressor sucking (within working limits compressor sucks in proportion to evaporator presure) and this eqilibrium determines boiling temp in evaporator.

If the heat load received as compressor is active is less than what you need to boil all coolant flowing you'll flood compressor and in most cases something (its valves) are gonna break, so one posible solution is to have a thermostat to shut down compressor with some security margin before you go below coolants boiling temp.

@Intraveinous: Oh man a beer would be wonderfull !!! I had my last one about 6 month ago on my goodbye party in germany. I dont understand your laws here ... lol ... everybody is driving with 14 or 16 but drinking age is 21. In germany you can legally buy some beer or even stronger stuff with 16. But hey ! My first time I got drunk was when is was 13 and no one really cared ... lol ...
I'm a West Hancock Highschool. But I can't drive yet. Only got my permit about 2 month ago and have to wait 4 more moth to get drivers ed. I think they changed some laws one odr two years ago so I have to go through all this ****ty stuff to get my full license. All because I'm only 17.
I seriously need a real drinking party ... lol ...
Oh and by the way, 3 years german classroom lessons won't teach you good german .. lol .. I guess german is a tough language for you guys. I had to learn french back in germany and believe me french sucks. Now I'm in spanish I but the class isn't really tough. For all people who speak spanish
"Tienen una polla pequena!"
"Ihr habt nen kleinen Schwanz!"
Ok second one is german. For all who understand this **** ... I'm just kidding ... lol

Get the "Yellow Pages" out and call a junk yard. Ask them if they got refrigerators.

It's the best source for cheap compressors.
