What is Nvidia thinking releasing a GPU that combines a GTX 275 and a dedicated physx GTS 250 (or 9800GTX, or 8800GTS) and puts them on one card.

Already a thread about this, but can't seem to find it atm.

Here's the other thread: Interesting Hybrid Card From EVGA (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=623483)
It seems kinda pointless to me since there aren't many games using PhysX.
The market this is pointed at is people who play PhysX enabled games, but they only have 1 PCIe slot. Which I think is very small, so there probably won't be many sold.

Nvidia isn't thinking anything. It's an EVGA product.

Thank you.
If you are going to get angry at anyone, get angry at EVGA, Nvidia had nothing to do with it other than supply the G92 cores.

I wouldnt buy one, but I think its a cool idea!

Sorry, didn't see it
I think its a great idea. Anyone wanting a physx setup without needed 2 cards, this is a great solution. Or simply get the GTX295..
For me it would be a good idea because I only have 1 pcie slot on my uatx.

At 300.00, it is cheaper than a 275 and 250 and you get a free game. :)

Is the 250 limited to physX only? Can you use it as 2nd folder/cruncher core? :)

Where have you seen $300? EVGA's MSRP is $350.

The only game worthwhile for Physx is Mirror's Edge, and that runs locked at 60fps (v-sync) w/ maxed out settings at 1920x1200 2xAA/16xAF on my rig w/ a single OC'd GTX280 doing both GPU and Physx duties.
I haven't seen a good use for a dedicated Physx card yet except to help heat up your house in the Winter.

There are two situations where this makes sense without question: 1. If you have a single PCIe slot and want a dedicated PhysX engine. 2. If you want a (rather powerful) dedicated PhysX card + two 275's in SLI and only have two PCIe slots.
It's a niche item for sure, but they are banking on PhysX gaining more popularity. Plus it helps EVGA get rid of its remaining stash of G92's. It would be nice to see it for $299 instead of $349 though.
I think it's smart for all of those reasons. It might not have a place for a lot of people in our particular community, but in the mainstream, I can see it having usefulness. Like Neuromancer, I'm curious as to whether you can fold on the 250. ;)

I like the concept, but there is no killer app for physx yet, like Jason said.
Plus a lot of the next generation game engines are building very advanced physics straight into them. Which would make Physx redundant.
Blizzard's SC2 engine for example.

Good idea!
Crappy price!

Meh.... if there was CURRENTLY more and better games available that used it, this would be a solid card I would imagine, but since there isnt but what, two games (Mirror's edge and that batman one) that use it well, niche is almost too forgiving of a word for the market this caters too...

Heh, well your definitition of a major title vs. mine may be different. There are ALOT that support it but there doesnt appear more than a few major titles. :)
interestingly enough, Mirror's edge isnt on that list..... ?

Well, I did notice it in COD5!
And maybe a few other games.. But right now cod5 is my main time killer heh..

I just saw the article that said above 300.00. I didn't assume it was 50.00 more than 300.

My point is that you don't need a dedicated card to run Physx at all. A single strong GPU (GT200) can run both graphics and Physx on a 1920x1200 monitor w/o slowing down below 60fps.
And if you have 2 or more GPUs there is WAY more than enough power to spare for Physx duties. A dedicated GPU for Physx is stupid when you have hundreds of SP's available. It's more for bragging rights than any real tangible benefit.
tbh physx isn't that BIG physics engine i would have thought of
when i ran mirror's edge or cryostasis i was kinda (can't find words to describe sensation)
blah . . .

Crystasis did not do too well with your 260..
You need more horsepower
