View Full Version : SETI & DSL Question... "Farming"

I have a home network... OK... Have the mac & PCs all connected to the DSL through a 24/7 Cisco modem & hub connection...

I am thinking of adding a few crunchers down in my basement... BUT, I cannot get to the DSL line roughly 5 levels above...

If I setup an internal DSL modem (which i happen to have) in one of the crunchers and use it as an internet server, can I sign on to the DSL server... logic tells me that I will not be able to sign on while the Cisco is online, but I should be able to diconnect the router then sign on & upload/download to the farm... yes?

Tell me, what am I overlooking...

Should I try to punch a CAT-5 line down to the basement?

SETI Driver can't handle that arrangement... SETIMonitor, my best option?

Thanks... :D

I dunno...it probly depends on your DSL company although it should work as long as the router is disconnected since it will not be a multiple login.

You will probably have to run the DSL software on the PC with the internal modem anyways b/c of PPPOE. You could always get a wireless hub too although that will cost several hundred for the hub and wireless NIC.

Or just investigate a bit and drop cable...luckily my house had an alarm system previously installed so I was able to cut the alarm wires and tie off my cat5 and pull cable all the way up to the attic

This is probably an overly expensive solution but have you looked into those network cards that run off RJ11 and can be plugged right into your existing phone line network yet?

5 Levels huh...sounds like a job for 802.11b but that would cost something like $250 or so for at least one nic and the wireless hub. Running the CAT5 is not to hard though and not to expensive...

Good luck.

forget 'bout 802.11b! it can't shot through 5 level! or unless u have a 3-5feet tall aftermarket antena....

Hey Morpheus! Its nice to chat again.
About farming; CAT5 is the way to go. Its cheap, its easy (well except for running cables), and it works. I use a Netgear router that has 4 ports for sharing printers and, of course, dsl with up to 255 pc's. Most routers let you log onto then to enter your user name and password for PPPOE. This is a cool feature. In november 2000, I got dsl but the pppoe software from Earthlink wasnt compatible with winMe (at that time). With the router, I didnt have to install any software from Earthlink. Just set windows to access the internet over a lan and the router does the rest. Also, almost all dsl and cable modems have CAT5 outputs.
Hope this helps,
Dan

I'd go for the cable drop if possible: cheap, and except for actually running the cable, easy and reliable.

Wireless is still having some problems (from what I've read) and that is a lot of junk for the signal to get through.

Using the dsl modem might work, but a pain in the neck to switch back and forth, imo.

I'd also go for a cable run. I have wireless here as well, and it reaches my basement fine, but I have an external directional antennae.

the cable actually will require some REAL work... LOL... I have a hard time conveying the arrangment of this house, but it IS a DIFFICULT path without stringing the cable:

1) outside the house, over the roof & down a 3-story wall (noway the wife would even consider the aestetics of this)...

2) INSIDE the heater duct straight down 3 levels, then THROUGH a concrete (or solid granite, I am not sure) wall and down farther... yikes...

OR... since their is a phoneline already there, I can manually switch over... download a BUNCH of WUs... then crunch... & repeat when necessary (weekly?)...

Need to find a client that will allow me to cache like that... (LOTS of WUs that is)...

Thanks for all you help so far... :)

Seti Driver can store a lot...I know it can hold 400 work units. I love that proggie.

I can't picture your floor arrangement, but it would great if you could try a wireless rig with a directional antennae and just see if it would work. If it didn't you could return it. I mounted my antennae in the attic at the far corner of my house. It aims down at a 45* angle and covers all the way to my basement. That's through 3 floors of wires etc. It would sure be an easy solution if it worked - only down side is cost.

If running CAT5 outdoors then you will need to protect it from damage by running it inside PVC or some type of conduit since CAT5 does not have any shielding like RG-6 or other coax. cable does. Running inside heater duct also is not a good idea b/c of heat, maybe along the outside of the duct

Or SMC has some nice wireless routers and access points and high gain antennas etc.....

Here's an idea. (Not a good one probably, but an idea nonetheless. :))

Have any of those sewage vent pipes running up from the basement through to the roof? Drop the CAT5 down one of those and "engineer" it to run out of the pipe to your other machines. Sure, it might be just a bit out of line with Code and there's a small chance for a bit of ignited methane, but it would be hella cool. :D

I know no one else would ever try this, but I like to break stuff. ;)

Godfodda... you gave me an idea... I will run the CAT-5 down 3 floors inside the heat vent... then go out of the heat vent and into the electrical conduit... :D

Sheesh... I am going to need a RJ45 crimper for this...

Morph...you mean you don't have a complete Cat5 toolkit laying around? ;)

Good luck.

Hey! There ya go. I guess my "crappy" idea was good for something. :D

If that crimper looks like it's going to cost you a bundle, let me know. I carry one on my truck (I think it's still there) that I can ship to you to use for a little while. It belongs to the company, though, so I'd need it back. Good luck with it.

another idea: if u do have a phoneline jack in the basement, u might wanna try Home PHA (sp?), phoneline networking. should give u better singal than wireless (unless u got a aftermarket antenna)....

The other day I was thinking about installing a home-netwotk I found that those RJ45 crimper can be found in several prices....there are some that are really expensive (like US$200 or so) and there are some chinesse chessy one that are like US$10.....so unless you want to do network installations for a living, go a buy one cheap one. Here in Mexico City we have a huge mall where computer stuff is sold in every store, so I found it there. BUt the other dy I went to CotCo (Price Club) y found it there too, and if my memory serve me right I think I saw it also in Sam's Club.
