View Full Version : Power vs Cooling
Hi,
Which one of these cards would be generally better?
Sapphire Radeon HD4870 Vapor-X 2GB DDR5
Asus Geforce GTX 275 896MB DDR3 Dual
The Sapphire one has much better cooling, is quieter and has more ram.
The Asus is more powerful but runs hot and is 50$ more than the Sapphire card.
I don't plan to renew my graphics card every month or 2, and i'll be playing at 1920x1080 resolution.
I have the HAF 922 case (for cooling reference).
Do you think i should go for the performance with the 275 or for the cooling and long life with 4870?
Thank you.

I think you should get a 1Gb HD4870 with a better cooler if anything...
The 2Gb of ram does nothing, would only be useful with 3 or 4 of them in CF really...
Long life is misleading, as gpu's run happly at 90C+
Heck I am sure mine reaches that for hours each day :)

I would go with the HD4870 1GB as well as the $50 premium wouldnt be worth it as far as performance /dollar goes.
Like badbonji mentioned, sort of...2GB of ram is essentially useless unless you game at 2560x1600 or w/e that 30" resolution is and dump some AA on top. I do not believe it has any bearing on CrossfireX performance at all. Someone please correct me if I am wrong on that one.

The thing is that not all cards are available where i live, only a couple and i have to choose between them.

Ok, so what cards ARE available to you? Is there a website you plan to order from that we can look at?
How about a budget?
This is the website (scroll down for video cards): http://www.pcandparts.com/price.htm (yeah, i know, it's sad)
I have a maximum of 300$ to spend on the card.

Great Scott! Wow....well, the 2GB on the card isnt going to hurt anything except MAYBE an overclock. I guess I would go with that still.
:p
Thanks for your advice.

I was just trying to say that you would need enough gpu power to actually need all that memory in the first place, it is like low end cards with 1Gb of memory, useless :P
What about the GTX260 on there? It will offer the same performance as the HD4870, should have room to overclock and it is cheaper :D (hope that is the Core 216 one though)
Inno3D Geforce GTX 260 896MB DDR3 Dual w/TV $224.00

The power of the card isnt the issue. Textures will load into memory on a 8800gt as they would on a Gtx285...

I chose the 4870 for its cooling and high-quality components. Plus, i've heard some bad things about Inno3D.
