hey a friend wants a ssd for his netbook and i was going to get him a vertex but then i saw this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139030&cm_re=kingston_ssd-_-20-139-030-_-Product

what do you guys think? about the same price as the vertex and double the space...

anyone know how these perform compared to the vertex?

I've heard good things about the Kingstons, but if it were my money I would stick with something that supports TRIM. I would stick with vertex or OCZ Agility (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227461).

Agreed. But what will he be using the netbook for? I always thought an ssd would be overkill for a netbook.

I put SSD drives in my netbooks and it made a huge difference. I highly recommend it.

well ssd for netbook wouldn't be overkill... i mean consider heat from mechanical drives is higher then SSD's. not only that but no noise when accessing data from the drive as well. all key factors for latop/netbooks..

Agility drive would be my recommendation for a netbook... though keep in mind if the OS doesnt support Trim he will need to use GC if supported by the firmware and drive. vertex and agility support both just load the correct firmware first then install the OS of your choice.

Which netbook will you be putting it in?

this is key... My netbook (mini 9) uses a half height pata mini pcie ssd... some eeepcs use a full height pata mini pcie ssd... others use a mini pcie sata ssd... and others use zif sockets and other things.

If it's 120gb then chances are its a 2.5" drive. Still possible it is a ZIF drive. Let us know what brand the netbook is.

Agreed, more than likely it has a 2.5" drive in it. I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I am looking for an SSD for my 900HA. I wanted an OCZ(I am cheap) so I was looking at Kingston too but now I just might get an OCZ. I am a big fan of their products so I might just go that route now.

If it's the 8.9" model, than it will be no fun changing the HDD. Pretty much full dismantle of the netbook. If it's the 10" model, it's much easier and quicker to do.

Either way, 2.5" SSD should work fine.

I have couple of the acer netbooks. They did require a complete rip apart to get the SSD installed lol. But let me tell you a story about my acer netbook. After upgrading to an SSD and one of these batteries (http://cgi.ebay.com/12-Cell-Battery-ACER-Aspire-One-D250-571-Laptop-WHITE_W0QQitemZ270443361797QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLapt op_Batteries?hash=item3ef7ae3605), I get over 15 hours of battery life. And they are surprisingly fast for a little netbook. Now if it only had a backlit keyboard.

That's the spirit. My brother put and SSD in his netbook. I played with it before and after ... might as well have been a totally different computer.

That battery is for the 10.1/11.6" AAO's. Not sure if one exists for the A150 line (which is the 8.9" model your friend has).

FYI most netbooks are limited to SATA 1.5Gbits so don't get freaked out if you bench the drive and see strangely low max seq. read/write scores.

But even with the limit, SSDs really make a netbook shine. I had a few in my old 1000H and it really helped alleviate the sluggish experience of working on an Atom powered device. :)

I have the 8.9" Acer one. I have been thinking about upgrading the 30GB UltraDrive ME drive in my Daily machine, then slipping it into the acer to pep it up as it is woefully slow right now.

There are plenty of tutorials(including videos) out there on dismantling this netbook to upgrade Ram, add bluetooth etc. It's a PITA, but definitely not impossible.
I'll keep an eye on this thread to see how you guys do, and if I get done first, I'll post my work log.
