Okay, just about to order a dual setup w/ an asus a7m266-d mobo. now, i see lots pf ppl w/ dual rigs using xp processors. i know they're not guaranteed to work but are they likely to as the money that would be saved by using them would come in handy.
Cheers,

Keep in mind, though, that you void your warranty by using them in dual configuration.
So don't come crying and screaming back to your vendor when they don't work... it's just a risk you gotta take.
Void what warranty. As long as you do not state thay are in a dual board AMD will warranty them. Also buy board and Processors from 2 seperate retailers,For obvious reasons......

Well me being a retailer I would not like this. Just buy them and if it screws up just deal with it and move on.

And me being a consumer at the mercy of profit margins I will play it my way.....I am also a business owner and deal with consumers enough to know you cant win them all and you cant try to.
To the topic XP is fine in a dual board see SIG

Well I run a computer store and the rumor that we actually make money off CPU's is a bunch of BS. I sell mine at like 3% margain just to compete and I buy them directly from AMD. I watch for people like this everyday and I still have a wonderful customer base. i just don't put up with consumers that ruin product and expect us to fix it. No Way!!
I'm running dual XP 1800+ retail CPUs on my A7M266-D right now at 1633 MHz. Both are Palomino cores and AMD does nothing to disable SMP in the XP versions. So, unless you just like paying more, go for XPs instead of MPs.

First wipe the tears away,AND THEN remember he aint buying this from you,and for a computer storeowner I would EXPECT you to know that ALL SOCKET A PROCESSORS FUNCTION PERFECTLY ON A DUAL TYAN S2460.To quote the B/S put in the press realises would have to make 1 think how much you dont know about what you are selling !!!
How did this topic turm into being about your gripes,it was a question about dual XP and being as you have no clue maby you should have moved on to a topic where you could have been some help.

okay, have ordered the mobo and xp 1800s now. thanks for putting my mind at rest. if by some poor chance they don't work in smp then they'll just be used in workstations and if they don't run in that then they will be returned!!!:)

From reading through the forums at 2cpu.com I have seen several people having FSB issues, slow boot up issues, problems/questions about Athlon XP's working in SMP etc. Here is my story.
1 - I purchased two Athlon XP-1700 for the A7m266-D
I was having troubles loading and installing the OS at 133 MHZ FSB. It would only run stable at about 123 MHz I figured maybe it was the ram.
2 - With my FSB set to 123, Wndows was VERY SLOW to install and to boot up (Win 2K)
3 - Since right after the POST, it would show my Hard drive UDMA 2 Rather than 5, I thought maybe that's why windows was loading slow.
4 - Both XP-1700's were detecting
Result:
It turned out that ONE of the XP-1700's coulnd't handle SMP! So I replaced it with another one that could, ran 3d mark for a few hours, and yay, it works.
I suggest to anyone before buying a Dual. BUY 2 XP'S! And get your delaer to test different combinations of CPU's. 80% of XP's are capable of SMP. (Even if the CPU's are from the same stepping, there is no guarantee that they will work.)
My Asus is running jsut fine right now, and as for the hard drive, it's just a bug. The hard drives are fast.
Anywas, I have some tips before buying a dual XP Board.
1 - Go to a dealer that would have a larger supply of XP procs
(Preferrably a dealer that knows you well)
2 - Tell them then you KNOW it will work with two XP's.
3 - Pay the extra $30 for labour and what have you and have them test the XP's in SMP (80 % chance it will work). Bring a copy of 3d Mark just incase to run benchmarks.
4 - Congrats, now you have a Dual XP system that runs exactly like a Dual MP for less $$
There is no difference between XP's and MP's. MP's have been tested for SMP, and XP's have not. About 20% of XP's are DUDS and can't handle SMP.
This is based on my research and experience.

Maybe just tired of little babies crying when they screw up there hardware due to lack of knowledge and expecting the retailer to replace them. It just makes the consumer pay more. But if you want to make this personal we can certainly go there, just do it by PM. I welcome any comments you have on this. Let's keep it mature here. question.....with those dual boards they have those huge PCI ports...are those backwards compatible with the smaller PCI boards?? and what are they used for?
thanx

Yes they are, They are 64 bit PCI slots, but will run back to 32bit when a 32bit card is installed.
Also guys watch out, I have heard some of these MPX (?) boards disable dual XP's if they are installed, however 1 will run fine, but for dual u need 2 mps. Im going to have to say people who want dual setups should get MPs simply because AMD supports them. AMD makes MPs for a reason, and XP's for another. They are a loyal company so I would not want to rip them off. I have had great luck and support from them for awhile. So if I were to build a AMD dual setup, it would be with MPs.
Then again thatz just me...
