I attempted to overclock my PII 400 today and nomatter where I put the clock multiplier, it will still post at 400MHz. What am I doing wrong. I don't want to overclock to death because my board does not have a variable voltage setting.

You can not change the multiplier, it is locked. To o/c
you increase the FSB

Yes, all Intel cpu's have locked multiplyers. This covers some P2 300's ( I have an unlocked one :D ), 350's and all Intel chips up. However, some engineering samples of Intel chips ( very, very, very small amount ) exist with an unlocked multiplyer. If you were to have one of them, you would be VERY lucky!! :)
In your case, you will have to o/c your cpu by increasing the fsb of the mobo.
Good Luck!

Do you guys know of any modifications that will unlock the frequency multiplier? My board will only support a 66/100FSB.
There is no way to unlock the Intel multipliers. Nope, none, nada, zip, zilch.
Pipebom, what's the SSpec of your P2/300? I have 2 SL2HA ones laying around w/o HSF. Just curious.
Comptech, since you have a PII board, it is probably jumperless. If it isn't, check mobo for jumper pin adjustment you can make for FSB. If it is jumperless, FSB changing happens in BIOS. If your current BIOS doesn't support > 100 FSB, you'll have to check mobo maker's website for a newer BIOS release which may allow for more FSB adjustments.
That processor should run just fine at 100fsb. That keeps the rest of the system in check also, and is a much cleaner OC if you can hit it. the only ones really in between 66 and 100 are the 75 and 83 fsb's that really start to throw the rest of the system off. Try the 100 and I have a fealing that you will be greatly surprised. If it wont post at 100 try to get a better hsf and try it again.
it IS possible to unlock a pentium, but youll need a lot of money for it! i know a guy who does it, but you kinda have to manipulate the core. he really knows about ti as he worked for siemens as a developer and also worked for amd for some time. he is unlocking a p4 2.0 (he was one of the first to get some when they were released and hes still working on it and already broke 1of 3)
there are tools that help you setting fsb to every fqncy your system supports. those are software applications. they only work if your northbridge is supported.

Sorry Johan, I don't understand what you mean by SSpec? Which specs are they??
Pipebom, on top of the slot1 cartridge, there are various #s. On mine, the last six #s are the MHz and L2 cache (i.e. 300512) followed by EC (= cache is error correcting, maybe). Right after that (w/ a space in between) it states SL2HA; this is the SSpec. The country of mfg. is directly underneath the SSpec; mine says Phillipines.

Aha! Got ya Johan. The MHz and L2 cache is the same as yours - 300512E. The SSpec is SL2QC, and it was made in Malay. There you go! Hope that helps you find out whatever your trying to find out. hehe :D
Pipebom, I am waiting on a HSF unit for my 300 and I was wondering if mine was unlocked; didn't want to test without proper cooling. Since your CPU is of a different variety, I am doubtfull that mine will be unlocked. Thanx for the info.

Just because our cpu's are of different variety doesn't mean that yours won't be unlocked. It may mean thats its not likely. But thers always hope. Let us know when you get your hsf.
Good Luck!! :D
Pipebom, I got the HSF and tried OCing the P2 300. It does not have an unlocked multiplier. :(
The highest I could get it was 83FSB in a Trinity 400 mobo (374MHz). In my Aopen AX6L, it would only go to 75FSB (but that may be b/c of the lower quality RAM I'm using in that board).

Oh well, not to worry. You've got the fsb up a bit for a reasonable o/c. My chip uses a default fsb off 100MHz ( 3 x 100 ). Thats in my faviour when it comes to increasing the multiplyer ( I'm still in search for a mobo to run mine on ). I hope you can get yours just that little bit higher. Where would you be happy at?? What do you aim for? :)
Pipebom, I'm just playing around w/ this chip b/c I had it laying around. It's currently in the AX6L and will remain there until I get my 500 Celly to thow in there. If it was unlocked, that would be kinda cool and I probably would have just kept it in the AX6L for a grin.

No worries mate. Hope the Celly 500 works well for you. :)
