I wanted some input on this. Just to see what options I have and what folks think. First I am going to give the basics what I am working with, then what I want to do. Then maybe somehow I can finger something out that works good for the bedroom HTPC. I am using spare parts I had lying around. So I am not going to do a full rebuild. Just looking to fill in the blanks. Hopefully cheap and simple.

Hardware:
HT -- Sony DAV-HDX576WF
PC -- BioStar VIA KM800 / 6600GT(AGP)
TWC -- DVR HD Cable box

Ok them be the basic parts I am trying to get going. As the HT is involved. I am wondering about the sound, That stupid Sony HTIAB and the cable box only has room for ONE TOSLINK EACH. So this mean I have to find a solution for something to pass-through for the PC.. I have PC surround setups. But that does nothing for the cable box.

I tried to solder up a digital coax and connect it to the MB header, without success. So I am willing to buy a part to complete this. Internal, external or a breakout box. Really does not matter. Long as I can bring something from the cable box to the PC , then pass it to the HTIAB.

I do not need high end for this. The living room setup has that and then some. Plus I am not looking to record, just make the sound work for a WiFi connected machine to th server. Being able to watch cable TV also.

I am very willing to answer questions and dialog on suggestions. i prefer to use TOSLINK if possible. Digital Coax maybe an option...

does yur onboard sound actually put out all 5.1 channels over digital? I know that at least a few years ago not many onboard solutions actually put out 6 channels on digital, you had to use analog to get surround in games. if that was the case for your computer it might be easiest to use analog to the htiab and digital from the cable box.

Only way i know of is to use the line-in port on the sound card/mobo.
It's analog and only two channels though.
