This is weird. In the network and sharing center (advanced sharing settings) I disable password protected sharing, for both home/work and public, and save changes, but no matter what, whenever I go back in there, they're still enabled! I've tried every other way of accessing drives on my win7 box from my xp box (setting a password for the win7 account, user permissions, creating an identical account name on 7, having full permissions for "everyone") but I simply can't access anything. The message I'm getting at the moment:

logon failure: user account restriction. possible reasons are blank passwords are not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced.

The only thing I've been able to do is format my drives to fat32, and then these permissions go away, but I really don't want to have to do that... btw, I can access my xp box just fine from the 7 one, even though all drives are ntfs.

Have you done any thing to the guest account the guess account should have a blank password to allow. Connections with no passwords.

Rommie,

To solve this, on the Win 7 machine, go to run type "regedit.exe", then go here: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\limitbla nkpassworduse and change from "1" to "0"

Also, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to also check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.
