neighbor has an open network,, little over a block away. (have permission to use it) have an antenna on the roof connected to a ddwrt linksys wrt54g tm router as a repeater. can get the signal wired but since antenna is on roof not wirelesly. need to set up my other identical router to broadcast signal through house. want to wire lan to lan to connect routers and have both routers on upstairs landing but don't know how to setup second router. help please

I would recommend repeater bridge mode on your routers.

says first router must be in ap mode. can't repeat his signal unless in repeater mode can i?

Your neighbour's router is in AP mode, right? You can have as many repeaters chained as you want as long as one end of the chain is an AP.
