View Full Version : Dell 4300 overclocking?
I am new to Overclockers.com, and computers.
So what I have read is that Dell Computers are NOT Overclockable?
Dell Dimension 4300
P4 1.6
384mb sdram
GF2 mx tvout
Also what motherboard do I have?
Thanks,
Tre
welcome to the board. you'll find all of the help you need with that board in the intel motherboards forum.

Whew! I though you were asking about a Poweredge 4300.
They have a propritary board that is usually made by mobo company, like Abit, Asus, Epox..., for Dell to Dell's specs. I might be able to find a diagram in PDF from the Dell site. Most of the time you can't easily overclock them.
Welcome to the "Overclocker's of the World"s best forums!... Where men are men, women aren't sheepish, and the words 'can't be overclocked' are never spoken.
Browse thru the other threads here and if you can't find the answer to your question, then post it and watch the miracles happen!
Nothing's impossible....
Again.. a warm "welcome aboard" !!

That is what I thought they were doing.
I have yet to see a Dell with a overclocking function in the BIOS.
I think that you may be able to flash the bios to a suitable overclocking one but its very risky.

Some are, some are something else.
the problem with the Dell boards are there PLL units, phase lock loops
If you get an engineering book, most will show 3 general PLL diagrams
i don't have my book hany, but basically 2 out of the 3 are tweekable through hardware or software
of course 1 of them is easier than the other, and that type of PLL is what you find on most of the ABIT, IWILL, ect... boards
and, unfortunatly for you, DELL uses Intel Boards, in which their engineers have designed a complex PLL unit themselves
not worth messing with
my dad does chipsets at DELL, thats how i know.
now there is a software that Intel has that will allow you to change the PLL on there boards. Most people besides Intle engineers that have it are people like dell engineers, and other companies alike.
Anyways, my dad has the program, but i can't seem to get him to give it to me

Your going to find it very difficult(or impossible) to overclock a Dell, My recomendation would be to save up some money and get a motherboard that can be overclocked. If your case is ATX, you should hav no problem swapping. Then you can upgrade the system as time goes on.
The only problem that I can see with this is that the copy of your OS provided by Dell may only work with the original setup... I think that is a coorprate method of forcing people to buy a new computer instead of upgrading...

Unfortunately, if his Dell is anything like mine (Dimension 8100) he will find that Dell uses their own clip type mounting that is incompatible with ATX mobo's. So what does that leave you with for options. Simple really, but not. You are going to need:
1: ATX Computer Case
2: ATX Motherboard (same socket as your CPU)
3: This one is a maybe. But you may need a Power Supply also.
Also you are correct his Dell branded Windows install disk will work only with his Dell computer. ( I tried to install with my disk on to a Compaq, needless to say it didn't work) So you would probably have to buy a copy of whatever OS you wanted to run.
So unfortunately as far as I have found it is next to impossible to overclock a Dell.
EDIT: oh yeah, Welcome to the Forums Tre!!!
i have an overclocked dell right on the floor near me , i use it as a router/firewall
its is a dimension xp and came in two configurations at 200 or 233.
i have the 200 and jumped it to the 233 and it runs fine, it came with 32 megs of ram and i had to purchase another 32 from dell to get it up to its max of 64, non dell ram did not work, and i tried a few i had around
my mother has a xps 300 that i gave her for web use and email(her only use)came in like 300, 333,366 and to oc it i had to jump the mb to get into the advanced bios set up, and even though it did have the option to select 300, 33,66 in the advanced screen i was then able to access, it would not boot at anything other then 300. it does have a voodoo 3 that works fine, however the 3d nitro that came with it works right only in that system, that system took 128 of micron, non dell ram with no probs
so based on all that i would say your only hope would be to set it to the highest availabe config that was produced for your model, if you can even do that anymore, or if u dont have the highest

you could try using clockgen.
I take that back you need to know the motherboard for that sorry.

^^^ you could use cpu-z to identify the chipset and then try setting it to different m otherboards using that chipset
