The upgrade is definitely worth it, very noticeable. Just get an Intel or OCZ Vertex.
Or Crucial M225. Nothing like a 15-second Windows boot and a 4-second shutdown...

Like EarthDog said, that's a G1. You want a G2. As for as most bang for the buck, in that price range you have a couple of options:
Vertex 60GB is a good choice. If you need space, OCZ Agility 120GB can be had around that budget as well. It's a little slower than the Vertex but still blazing fast compared to your raptor. You can also try to find a X25-M G2 80GB that isn't being price gouged in the $200-$250 range. Another option is getting two of the Kingston X25-M G2 40GB drives in RAID0 for around $200 total.

so this is the G2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167016
and this is the vertex u talk about: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227394
??
Yeah. Here's a G2 80GB in stock at a better price: http://www.valleyseek.com/product/show/169079
If I were purchasing right this second, I would go ahead and order that over the Vertex.

You can't put a price on happiness SuperMiguel! :mad:
:D
Kidding aside, I think you should still go for it if you're looking to buy now.

3x $85 kingston 40GB SSDs should be alright, no?

I honestly don't wanna go back to raid, unless it has mirroring... running raid 0 is just higher risk of loosing data...
EDIT: Btw, has anybody bought anything from that valleyseek.com site? just wondering coz the site main page looks shady :|

Sorry I don't quite follow you... making my internal into external? wouldn't it be the same?

well i would say get a ssd based on what os your going to run or wiether it be raid'd or not. In raid intel G2's, trim will not work, trim will also not work on XP or Vista, i dont think linux has support for trim yet either. If running raid or XP/Vista get a drive that can do GC. Im not sure if you can do GC with linux but if i recall right GC isnt OS depentant. the computer just needs to be put into sleep state or was it S1.
OCZ vertex, vertex-ex, agility, and agility-ex, can depending on the firmware do GC or Trim. Not both at the same time, there is nothing wrong with getting one of those from OCZ. Intel drives are more suited to smaller writes then the OCZ's but the difference will not affect you day to day computing.
just more food for thought.

The best bang for the buck right now is going to be an Agility, simple as that. Don't bother with the Corsair drives because they are the same thing as OCZ Vertex and Agility, but without the firmware suport, which you want. Find the best price you can on an Agility or Vertex. The G2 Intel is great also but hard to find and more money even if you do. My advice is go with an OCZ and don't look back until next time you are ready to upgrade.
60gb Agility (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=OCZSSD2-1AGT60G&cid=6022486240439528344&sa=button#scoring=p)
60gb Vertex (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=OCZSSD2-1VTX60G&cid=15509665291307378322&sa=button#p)
Vertex will be a little faster, but sometimes(not always) the Agility can be found for cheaper.

Getting an SSD for a laptop is a great idea.
A laptop hard drive is basically one area where a laptop is guaranteed to be slower than an equivalent desktop, eliminating that bottleneck can make a world of difference.

Yeah my board takes 30 seconds to finish post uggggg
Well im going to be running this in my laptop, so raid is out of the question...
I'm currently using my Crucial drive in my Toshiba M700 tablet; the boot times I referred to earlier are for this installation. Sorry, i7, users...
My experience is similar to others; it's hands-down the most significant performance gain I've ever witnessed for a notebook. I went for the Crucial over the Intel because I needed an affordable larger drive to accommodate the heinous quantity of software I need to run on the OS drive...

Yes, it is. You can tell from the G2 in the model number: SSDSA2M080G2R5

Is this gen2? Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2M080G2R5 2.5" 80GB
As the person above you said, yes.
Funny enough, I actually saw the technical diagram for the name and I found a misnomer. People think the "G2" means generation 2. However, it's only the "2". "G" represents gigabyte as in "80G" = 80 gigabyte.
80G = 80 Gigabyte
2 = Revision 2
R5 = Retail
