Make sure your getting some help from the team on this sno, I know you have a lot of your own reviews and stuff also to keep you busy. ;)

Also, if possible I'd like to see an article that's an introduction to the benching team for new readers. It should tell people what the spirit of the benching team is, what its goals are, where to go to get started, who to contact for help, etc. I'd like to have an article like this for each team in the reference section on the right hand sidebar of the frontpage.

No problem, I'll get started immediately :)

Great!

Is it time-sensitive? I'll look at it when I have a chance.

Thanks.

Working on a Forum Wars writeup right now.

I'll also start posting stuff more regularly for this section.

Working on a Forum Wars writeup right now.

Deanzo had mentioned he'd handle this, so you may want to check if he's taken any action on it. I know he was waiting for mid January so it wasn't too soon or too late.

Either way, glad its getting done.

sno.lcn
01-13-10, 12:02 PM
Sweet, he'll probably be better at writing it up than me since he knows more about it :)

Might want to check if he's put any time on it yet - having something ready to publish is better than nothing!

Ross took #1 on the team, I'll be writing up about that this afternoon

What's the status on the forum wars writeup? I need something to announce. :)

Ross' article is ready for publish.

mdcomp
01-19-10, 07:54 PM
Expediting the article since its news, so it will go up tomorrow. Might go up in addition to another article, depends how the rest of the week looks. Either way, expect to see it tomorrow.

Thanks for getting this ready so quick. I did a morning scan of all the sections looking for anything news-worthy and before I even got the thread, you had already mentioned getting an article staged. Great work! I feel like most of our content is not really time-sensitive, but I want us to work towards being a reputable news source as well as informational tool for overclockers/benchers and PC enthusiasts. This is a step in the right direction.

Great, nice work!

I believe we also have an individual examining benchmarking apps and other utilities in more detail - essentially reviewing relevant software to overclocking in general. A guide specific to what benchmarkers use, the what, why and how is also great to cover.

I'll see when I can get around to working on it, I really wanna get it done by the end of this weekend.

03-12-10, 04:57 PM
I don't know where this would fit, so I'll do it here for now, even though it has nothing to do with the benching team.

After the MSI H55 review I'm starting on next week, I'm doing an Intel vs. AMD IGP shootout, putting the i5's igp against AMD's best integrated graphics, the HD 4290. Yes, I know doing an Intel vs. AMD compare always brings out the fanboys, but I'll be as objective as possible. I may need to buy something better than the crappy Athlon II I have to make it more fair. Probably have this done in 2 weeks or so.

*Edit: Found a home for this. General hardware, duh! :bang head

What's the status of this? I know it was a while ago but.

I think the one I'm working on would be a great follow up to this one if it is still in the works, or if it's been abandoned we can try to find a writer for it. I'll continue working on mine, but my time is very limited until middle of May with graduating and finding a job and whatnot.

That never developed sno, whoever was talking about doing it hasn't pushed it forward. Don't let it hold you back.

If that does end up happening, it will be some sort of ongoing column, with each article focussing on one or a few different overclocking related applications.

EarthDog
04-07-10, 12:07 PM
Ive been chomping at the bit to write something relevent... feel free to task me with this. Is there already a shell/thoughts on the format supplemental to IMOG's request? If not I can just take the bull by the horns and write it up... Just give some generics on the bench, links to DL inline, and further still some generic ideas on how to get the best score (leaving the juicy details as a lure to join the benching team. I can cover all the benches at the bot, as well as all the utilities needed for 2d/3d.

LMK guys.

sno.lcn

Go for it

EarthDog

Will do. I will keep you posted and likely get started on it today in WP...

I.M.O.G.
04-07-10, 12:25 PM
Sweet! Ya, the idea for the column is basically a software review, including tips on how/why overclocker use the software, as well as insightful stuff that most people wouldn't know (the canyon scene in 3dmark is the most CPU intensive, the other part is most GPU intensive, etc, etc).

That's just the original pitch for a series of articles... But make it whatever you want to make it, however you find it to be the most interesting.

Basically for the site, it'd be easy reading that would interest a wide audience... For the teams, it's a good inroad to promote checking the team out. Benching stuff is easy and may be the most interesting to start with, and it's easy to think of how the same can be done for folding (hfm.net, other folding apps), etc.

EarthDog
04-07-10, 12:30 PM
My initial thoughts were quite similar. Something high level with at least a teaser on tricks for the benches (OS's since that is public also). There will be links inline as mentioned to the benching team (some accomplishments) and signup thread. I will incorporate screenshots of the utilities to keep it visual also.

:)

...off to lunch!

I'm modding some HD 5870's for some friends, I'll do a work log and make an article about it. It may get pretty crazy depending on what all they want done. If nothing too extreme I'll wait and do it on my own card when it gets back from being on loan :)

EarthDog
04-18-10, 02:25 PM
Ok... she is ready to be fact checked, some blanks filled in (best OS for a couple of the benches), and w/e you guys see fit that need added or chopped...Pictures are in there also.

Question on the pictures... should I keep all Hwbot images in there (credit was given in caption and at the end...hosted on our WP site, not hotlink).

LMK!!!!

Wow, great job! Someone did his homework, there's some fantastic information there :)

One thing worth mentioning is about the 3d benchmarks, many of them are becoming a pure CPU race these days because graphics cards have gotten so powerful.

EarthDog
04-20-10, 09:00 PM
tyvm!! there was some holes in there that needed filled in or edited out...specifically in the areas of the OS for certain benches (some arent in there). I will add in what you mention as well. so true.

hokiealumnus
04-20-10, 11:49 PM
Went through it and did a few minor edits for front page cleanup. The only thing missing is the OS for PiFast. It seems to have been replaced with a bunch of ellipsis! :p

Stick that in there, or just put that you don't know, whichever. Once that's done, it should be good to publish. Thanks and excellent work!

EarthDog
04-21-10, 06:30 AM
Ok. Changes made and pushed to Submit for review status!

I see spacing was pushed together for the headings (2d, 3d, etc) We didnt want an extra space below the large bold headings?

hokiealumnus
04-21-10, 07:12 AM
Hmm. I didn't push them together, odd. I did insert some paragraphs in the first section, but the spacing should be there. Will have a look at it. Thanks for the heads-up!

EDIT - Just had a look. You were editing so I couldn't do anything to it, but it seems there is paragraph spacing there. Looks like it did last night, which is fine. :)

EarthDog
04-21-10, 11:46 AM
I had the sections double spaced (Utilities, 2d, 3d, 2d/3d - meaning there was 2 spaces prior to and after) and using the Paragraph 2 formatting which was removed on one of them for some reason (I added it back in). Im not opposed to single space at all, but thought double space between the larger and bold sections would look better and not run together. Either way Im good with!!!

I took Matt's post suggestions and edited those in as well. I didnt know he was our new proofreader... w00t! :)

Anyway, It should be good to go.

That GPUz and GPU-z was just an oversight on my part. I copied the rules from Hwbot and changed some but not all.

Published. Great work EarthDog!!!

One note about images - and everyone needs to pay attention to this. When inserting an image in the file, make sure you're linking to the image FILE, not the attachment ID. You can accomplish this when inserting by clicking on "File URL" at this screen:

http://www.myalbumbank.com/albums/userpics/10080/images08.jpg

Not a big deal this time, I fixed them all. Just in the future, please keep that in mind. Thanks, and again, excellent work on this article!

MattNo5ss
04-21-10, 03:13 PM
It's already up!

Some of the suggestions weren't changed; did an older draft get published? (Can that even happen?)

hokiealumnus
04-21-10, 03:20 PM
It can, but only if we specifically pull up an older draft and save it. What's wrong with it?

EDIT - Never mind, went through your suggestions and changed the ones that needed changing. Thanks for pointing that out Matt!

EarthDog
04-21-10, 03:56 PM
Oops on those pictures...my bad! :)

Weird... My last save was 2:48P and it was published what looks like an hour and a half later. The process was a little out of whack seeing as how a 'titled' proofreader wasnt making the changes to the document. Its really out of the writers hands once a CE (not an author) moves it to pending status.
EDIT: I did notice that once there was an autodraft saved in there, the draft would not show as saved in the history at the bottom...again this was in pending status. In draft status, this does not happen.

With that said, do the proofreaders have any more ability than writers and CE's in WP? Meaning, when they proofread after its moved to pending status, can they SAVE it or do they actually hit the subit for review button to save like me?

I think I'm actually in the Content Editor group, so I dunno what proofreaders are able to do; maybe IMOG, mdcomp, or hokie will chime in. I made sure not to directly edit anyone's article, I'm just giving suggestions.
