I heard that you could delete it in the registry, but I have never done so myself.

No. This should be moved to Operating Systems...why clutter our place anymore than it should be.
If you search Operating Systems, you will find the answer to this question easily...I just read it yesterday.
my dad spent about 4 hours on the phone with dell trying to remove that crap. yet another reson i don't like xp.
Run msconfig. Edit the startup list.
Ripped from some newsgroup awhile ago, this is what I did:

Search for "sysoc.inf" in C:\windows\inf - might need to show hidden files
and folders to see it.
Look for the line:
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7"
Remove "hide", close file and save changes; you can now remove MSN Messenger
from Add/ Remove programs, Windows Components!

One additional note: do NOT remove the "," after "hide" that has to stay there so it looks like:
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7"
Good luck!

That happens on occasion. Just don't make a habit of it, and there shouldn't be any problem.
'Least you got an answer, though!

No worries, we all do it once in awhile. :)
I have Win2K PRO - the easiest way I found to remove it is such...
It loads automatically when you open explorer, so I switched to OPERA 6 - it works much better, then I installed the program TRILLIAN - it interfaces with MSN,AOL,ICQ,YAHOO, and IRC. As long as IE stays closed... MSN will not autoload! version 3.6 and older can be uninstalled where as all version are not allowed to - another MS scam!! they have it tied in with ANYTHING microsoft... IE... WORD... OUTLOOK if any ms app is open it can not be closed...
Another reason for LINUX!!!

if you do not want to uninstall it, do start / run gpedit.msc (you DO have Professional dont you?) and goto computerconfiguration/ administrative templates/ windows components/ windows messenger . you can disable it from there.
if you have home or just wanna uninstall it, then read http://www.ntcompatible.com/faq.php?op=ShowFaq&myfaq=yes&id_cat=3&categories=Windows+XP and click on FAQ question #22

If you dont want to bother with the registry, just update MSN messenger (altho on XP it is called Windows Messenger), and then go to options. On XP there is a selection where you can choose if you want it to load at start up or not. Just make the change and reboot. Then you wont have to worry about it anymore.
