Windows loopback?

can you set up w2k to have a virtual nic without a physical one installed,I heard about this but am not sure if it's possable or how to do it.

Go to System Properties-->Hardware tab-->Hardware Wizard-->Install new device and let it search. Should not come up with anything so choose to add new device and skip the automatic search and do a manual one. Choose Network Adapters and you'll get a list to choose from. Scroll down to Microsoft and the loopback adapter will be the only one listed.
