View Full Version : Problem getting stock ATI heatsink/fan off.
I just got a Radeon 8500, and i want to put a blue orb fan on, and i cant figure out how to get the heatsink and fan off because im afraid to break it. Can anyone give instructions of how to get it off?
Where can i find some sofware to o/c my new card?

Ive heard of people freezing the card to get the heatsinks off, supposidly that weakens the bond. I would put it in a ziplock though, wouldnt want freezer burn. :D
If that dont work, the BFH will.

Place the card in a anti static baggie ,then put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes, then taking a credit card and butt it up to the exsisting Heatsink, Place a butter knife on the credit card and It should just pop off.

Just what I was goin to say!
Some ppl have tried to get them off with a Hairdryer, don't!!!
You can easily fry your card.

I got a 7500 and slipped my student ID card (any card will work) underneath the hsf and put the screwdriver on it and popped the hsf right off...no damage at all...and i didnt even hav to freeze it...although I think u should because i probably just got lucky:D
After you take the hsf off, do you need to clean up the chip that it was attached to & if so, is IPA the best thing to use?

Yes, Clean up the old ATI goop with nailpolish remover that contains acetone.
Would you then use something like Arctic Silver Adhesive to attach the new HSF?

Will Isopropyl Alcohol work to clean it?
I need a cooler on it badly.

Alcohol will remove the ATI goop just not as quickly as Acetone based products.
nodoze Arctic Silver Adhesive will work great, but if your affixing ramsinks Arctic alumina Adhesive is the safest solution.
Alumina is better because of Silver is more conductive, or does Alumina have better heat transfer characteristics?

Arctic Silver Adhesive is the better of the two for heat dispersment, But Arctic Alumina adhesive is non capacitive. (its made out of ceramic not silver particles.)
Both are great products.
