hmm, i must change my description.

help. i have just bought a glaciator 2 for my computer and replaced the coolermaster 1.4ghz and above heatsink i had in it. now my computer runs 4 degrees hotter!

whats going on? my old heatsink had a pad, and my glaciator came with artic silver so i cleaned my cpu with a wet tissue.

i have about 4 theories as to why its hotter can someone tell me which one is most likely please.

1. i got quite a bit of artic silver everywhere, i tried to clean it off, but there is still some around the chip, but not on the bridges and stuff, could this be conducting more heat to the sensor. where is the sensor exactly?

2. the glaciator is 2cm wider and longer than my coolermaster could this be bringing more heat to the temp sensor? do i need some better air flow thru my case, i dont really have any directed at my processor but also i never put my case sides on.

3. on the artic silver site it says that it takes about 48 hours maybe more for the stuff to become efficient, is this 48 hours running time, or does it include when the computers off?

i'm thinking of cutting a hole inmy backplate to cool the otherside of my processor with a 9cm fan, would this help me reduce my temps alot do you think?

4. someone suggested that the bearings on the fan etc need time to break in and so wont be fully efficient for a couple of months, any ideas on that?

If you got Artic Silver all over the place it sounds like you didn't follow the instructions very carefully. You need VERY LITTLE Artic Silver to do the job. I also have to wonder how effective a "wet tissue" was in removing the debris from the thermal pad you used to use. I would suggest starting over. Get some acetone or 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean up the CPU. Use a lint free cloth. Use the same stuff to clean the accumulated Artic Silver off the heat sink. Now go to the Artic Silver web site and carefully read and follow the very detailed instructions on how to properly apply Artic Silver.

As for putting a fan on the back side of the motherboard, it will no doubt lower your temperature readings, but it's unlikely it will do anything at all to the core temperature -- which is what you should really be concerned about.
