Ok... got a P3 1000e today... socket 370 using abit slotket III. I can't post with it. Motherboard is an Asus P3B-F. Using an 800eb with the slotket now and no problems. All fans running normal. When I put the 1000e in my fans spin but really slow. Is it a bad chip or is it my motherboard?
Sounds like a bad or loose connection somewhere. Maybe try and reseat the CPU and slotket again. If you still have no joy, switch the 800 back in and see if that works ok still. Seems like the CPU must be seated all the way before the mobo will power up.

Hmmm... got another question... the 800eb is what I'm using now... but my motherboard supports up to a multiplier of 8.5. But the multiplier is locked (intel) at 10. Would this cause the problem.
You gots the latest BIOS?

absolute latest that I know of... 1008 beta 004

It will not...My MB also supports only up to 8.5 and my processor is x11
The manual of MB said that multiplier settings on MB is ignored if you use locked multiplier processors like P3...so it does not matter what u set the multiplier
My advice , check that your FSB setting on MB is set to auto.

I know someone that has a Celeron 1 G (10 x multiplier) working just fine in a P3B-F. The PIII should work.
Its not on all boards thats why some may work some may not...
The best bet would be him testing it in another mobo that is 100% compliant with the chip or something.

Ok... maybe its the multiplier... but why do my fans kick down in speed?
are you using a different heatsink? Perhaps your PSU isn't strong enough
It is not the multiplier....Intel multipliers are locked and the processors 'force' the mobo to use the nessecary one regardless of whether the mobo supposidly supports it or not....
Does your bios support the Cdo stepping of Intel CPU's?

As for the psu... i've tried it without any fans or other cards in the system. And I do mean ANY. So the PSU isn't the cause in this case. Just in case I've ordered another one... a 400W... the one in use is a 250W. I'm assuming my mobo supports cD0 stepping. The 800eb I'm using is a cD0. Works fine. But what I really don't get is why my fans all slow down while the 1000e is in. I'm just lost here. I figured the processor would force the multiplier... but there is the off chance (i'm assuming anyway) that the motherboard doesn't like it. Only other thing I can think of is that this processor is bad. Any other ideas? I'm gonna take the processor in to be tested in the morning if all else fails.
do your fans have like a speed control? maybe the new chip runs cooler and needs less cooling from your fans then. have you tried the new chip without any pcis and no additional harddisks and drives? maybe it IS the psu cuz the new chip needs more volt?
well but then it would run hotter.... doesnt make sence:beer:

No speed control on the fans.... I don't get it. I'm not sure if it's the mobo or the proc. The store is closed today due to weather. So I couldn't get it tested. I'm STILL stumped. I think I'll just RMA it... unless I get a better idea before tomorrow. Thanks guys...:)

RainmaQer:
have not you tried to swap back the 800? if it works, then you know the motherboard is in shape, and i don't buy that psu crap, why? ok, i push the same 800 to 960 with 150w, so 250 should do just fine (and you are not even ocing it!!) my guess will be bad chip.

Well... I'm upgrading the psu just in case... need to anyway. But as for it not working... all I want to know is why ALL fans kick down. I don't know if its the chip yet... store was closed and couldn't test it today...

I would be leaning toward a bad proc myself. I ran my cD0 1000E chip in my old BH6 rev 1.01 board, which isn't even supposed to support any Coppermine P3's at all and it ran just fine. That was with using an abit slotket 3, just like you. One thing I just thought of; do you have the slotket set to auto on the front side bus jumpers? That is how I ran my cD0 and overclocked in the bios.

Yep... FSB and Voltage set to auto. I think it's just a dead chip. This might explain the fan thing... just hopin to get a somewhat positive answer on that.

It's official... it's dead... the core/die is cracked on the corner with a hole leading in to the center... very small... didn't notice it until I broke out the magnifying glass.... AHHHHH:(
