View Full Version : Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeMusic: cannot get it to work
I keep getting this error when trying to install software/drivers:
Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system. Please ensure that your product is properly installed before running this Setup program.
Setup will exit.
Here is my setup (it's my spare rig):
ASUS M2N-SLI DELUXE
Athlon BE-2400 @ 2.95ghz
ASUS 9600GSO 384mb, *EDIT* Upgraded to ASUS HD4850 512MB
36GB Raptor
2GB DDR2, *EDIT* Upgraded to 4GB DDR2
Windows XP Pro SP3, *EDIT* Upgraded to Win 7 x64
Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeMusic (tried 3 different X-Fi cards, all models were 64mb models)
What I've tried:
Reseating card
3 different 64mb X-Fi cards
Trying a different PCI slot (tried 2)
Tried 3 different drivers:
PAX - this here PAX PCI XFI All-OS-Driver V1.35(Driver Only)
XFI_SupportPack_2_0.exe
SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0013.exe (official from creative website)
WinXP Pro 32-bit, Win7 x64
BIOS Update
Clearing CMOS for 2 hours with battery out
I even tried to manually look for the drivers through device manager.
Both the XFi Support Pack and the official Creative driver pack gives me the error noted above (the one that says unable to detect a supported product)
I was able to get the installation to work when I tried the PAX driver pack the SECOND time. When I rebooted, the "multimedia audio controller" still had a yellow exclamation in device manager, but the software (Audio Control Panel) was installed, as well as the creative updater. The creative updater, when I try to run it, says it doesn't detect supported hardware, and the Audio CP software says the same thing.
I haven't been able to get this to work... I've spent a ton of time and am getting nowhere.
Give me links if you know of any other modded creative drivers, or other versions of PAX... I found PAX on google, so not sure if I was in the right spot... I got it from here (http://www.driverheaven.net/youp-pax-drivers/191403-pax-pci-xfi-all-os-driver-v1-35-driver-only.html)

You sure you didn't fry the card? Or maybe someone else did?
Tried it in a different system?
That's pretty weird..
Soundcards rarely give you a hard time installation wise unless they're DOA or something bad happened to them along the way.
I've installed your exact card for a friend using both CD drivers and downloaded drivers twice when he had to reinstall and when we first got it. Took a couple of minutes and no issues every time.
When you put it in a slot and start windows- does it detect new hardware? Does it detect that it's a soundcard? Is the card communicating any kind of ID back to the motherboard of any kind?

Yes, it's detected by Windows (XP Pro SP3), and it's listed as a multimedia audio device in device manager, but I just can't get it recognized in any way to get sound out of my machine... :(

Steer clear of creative products. Their quality has been steadily going downhill since their rise to popularity. For x-fi, go auzentech. I have the x-fi Forte from them and its absolutely fantastic.

This doesn't help my current cause in any way, though. =/

I had similar issue , what i can suggest is start from the beginning , run driver sweeper delete all creative and on board drivers while booted in safe mode , deleting all associated software is recommended as well , disable onboard sound in bios . And then install the drivers .Also that is an old machine and am not familiar with that hardware at all but look for any setting that might hinder the operation of a PCI slot .

to mister doogie howser, i have never had a problem with creative products... my X-FI xtrememusic is an amazing sound card.
That being said @ op have do you have the original driver CD? Never had a problem with drivers on xp sp3 or win 7 with my XM.

Okay, well here's the thing...
I've disabled the onboard audio, but I couldn't get soundmax to uninstall from add/remove CP... it just won't work, BUT... onboard audio is disabled in BIOS.
I use DriverCleaner Pro... which one is sweeper, and is it free?
Can it get any worse?
I tried driver sweeper from 2 different places of download, and I tried v2.10 (newest) and v2.05.
The error I get is what you see in the attached image.
In addition, I cannot uninstall soundmax for the onboard audio... still get that error: "The HDA Audio Bus driver is required and not found"
WTH!!!
I'm giving up. Maybe I'll try the card in another system... I can't take this anymore... gonna just go back to onboard audio. :(
External DAC + HP amp imo. Combo or separates. You don't need much of any amp for your AD700s so a combo is perfectly fine.

This isn't for my main machine with my AD700s... this is my spare rig that I have @ my parents' house. I go to my parents' place @ least once a week and sometimes even stay there some weekends, so I keep a gaming machine there. :)
I'm back on onboard... the headache is gone, for now, lol.

s'up, try this: Unzip/Unrar the compressed Setup file then go to Setup\Setup folder and double click on Setup.exe to install the program.

Where is that? I don't have the original CD. I'm using the drivers I downloaded that I mentioned in the OP... =/

You could always consider dropping $10 on DriverCleaner.net which is basically the current version of DriverCleaner Pro and actually gets updated. I did that like 3 years ago and it's come in handy in a few occasions.

For software installs, open whichever downloaded file you have in WinRAR and see if WinRAR can uncompress the original downloaded file so that you can then go into the Setup folder manually.

Do you always get the latest updates forever?
I still can't get my problem fixed.
I was finally able to get soundmax to uninstall correctly. I removed the x-fi card, went back to onboard, installed soundmax... then a few days later when I wanted to try x-fi again, I uninstalled soundmax and THEN disabled it in bios. I guess I couldn't uninstall soundmax the last time b/c I disabled it in bios first.
Regardless, I still can't get this X-Fi XtremeMusic to work!!! :(

Yes, it updates forever and works with any OS that uses .net framework (in other words, any MS OS starting with XP.) The updates are merely new driver profiles and definitions I think, not really 'program updates.'

Creative has notoriously bad drivers, that might be a problem, check on guru3d, I believe they have modded drivers.

Thx for the info, buddy.

It truly is a waste of my time... I'm extremely aggravated.
I've been on numerous forums, man... and even if there IS a solution, I almost am starting to not care. There are assumptions that the card is shot, though...
unfortunately there is no solution to your problem. i had the exact issue with my xtrememusic on xp sp3 and ended up just buying a new card. its a pci bus latency issue that causes the problem, the same one related to the SNP problem people are having. i only had luck running the first released drivers off the cd.
the problem arises on virtually every chipset platform out there, i had the same thing happen from an nf4 setup to an x38. i wish i could say theres a solution but given creative's shoddy track record for quality with the xfi series, the only way out is to buy another brand.
i have an xtreme music that i bought recently and it works fine on win7 pro 64bit
what you can try to do is force a driver install, which involves right clicking the card in device manager and doing have disk..etc. theres likely guides on google about how to do this
it could also be a mobo issue.. is the pci clock fine? i think 33mhz was the value to 'lock' at

I tried finding the driver manually... there is no "force" option, but either way it didn't work. Maybe it is the board, but that stinks as that's the only board I needed it for. My other machines either already have an X-Fi or run raw digital format to an external decoder...

Sounds like this card is affected by Creative's notorious disregard for supporting their cards. Other than getting lucky with original CD driver, sounds like joining the legions of dissatisfied Creative customers is in the cards for you too. :(

My X-Fi is going straight to the garbage when I either get my Xonar STX or Claro HT.

Don't throw it away. There's probably an OS/configuration it can do basic work on somehow.
I have drive images of all OS since 95 just in case this happens, I reimage back to first boot state, then experiment away... Unless the card is defective, I bet you I can get it to work and tell you how I did it ;).
Well I'm back to this problem, on a different X-Fi this time. It's now an X-Fi Fatality Pro Series SB0460 sound card.
I get the same darn problem. The last card (the one from the original post) was returned to the previous owner, and he popped it in no problem on a Win 7 machine.
Here's my guess:
This motherboard + Windows XP SP3 + X-Fi = BAD COMBO!
I think the problem lies between the mobo chipset and the xfi, being on Windows XP.
I'd love a solution... I can't afford to pay for Windows 7 or to have to change my entire motherboard b/c Creative is a bunch of idiots... sorry, they really are for giving this many people problems, and for not paying Daniel K some serious dollars to just fix this for them!
Just spent another 3 hours approx.
I don't know why I'm so glued to wanting to figure this out, but I think I'm now interested in solving this impossible task... def need help, though.
My next move is a format I think. This is on my spare (secondary) gaming rig that I keep @ my parents house when I visit there. I'm there every other weekend or so (had dinner with family tonight so I'm staying overnight), and I want an X-Fi card to work on this machine (specs in OP).
I have a single 36gb raptor on here, so no partitioning. I also have a file-svr here that I built for my family yrs ago when I used to live here. I let them keep it... I've got about 800GB on there, and it's stuck on a 100mbit since my main ethernet line is Cat5 and not 5e :( So... I gotta bring another HDD over next time to do a format/install... I want to keep this one available if things don't pan out right.
Any suggestions? I tried all the things I did last time, only this time I got Driver Sweeper to finally work!! .NET framework had to be on here... I already had 2.0 I think, so I just went with installing 2.0 SP2, 3.0, 3.5...
I ran DriverSweeper 2.1, Driver Cleaner Pro, Glary Utilities, and CCleaner, all in safe mode and various combinations.
Before doing all of this tonight, I uninstalled the onboard audio by uninstalling SoundMax from the control panel, rebooting to safemode and cleaning with DriverCleaner Pro (driver sweeper doesn't have 'soundmax' in its list), restarted, went to BIOS and disabled onboard, save and exit, turned off as soon as machine POSTed, installed x-fi fatality card, went into windows, and since then I've been trying everything I stated in my posts tonight.
I tried:
Support Pack 2.0 (I think that's Daniel K)
PAX v1.35, v1.40, v1.60 (yup, all of them)
Creative X-fi driver from their website
PAX's newest suite (was going to try software without driver)
All of them say they don't detect a supported hardware.
Oh, and I also flashed to the newest motherboard BIOS, and I even uninstalled chipset drivers, ran cleaners... I tried installing the XFi drivers while there was no chipset driver, and then reinstalled chipset drivers and tried again.
Other than formatting, did I miss anything? Yes, I've tried diff PCI slots. Yes, this is the SECOND X-Fi card I've tried in this machine and they all give me this problem.
I understand if no one wants to help... I'm probably just beating a dead horse, but I'm so eager to find a solution!!! One thing I lack is knowing how to adjust/program drivers, or I'd be doing that too!! :D
I guess no one cares, but I'm still updating this thread.
I installed Windows 7 x64 ultimate on a new hard drive and tried different drivers... STILL GET THE SAME ERROR!!!!!!!
I tried 3 different X-Fi cards when I was on WinXP. I only tried one so far on Win7, but I'm guessing it's a motherboard chipset and XFi HARDWARE compatibility issue.
What do you guys think?

...that Creative is notorious for issues such as you describe and that choosing another brand is cheaper because of the amount of time you won't spend with driver and compatibility issues.

I've probably spent 10 hours, who knows... but I was willing to WASTE that time as I'm gaining an understanding of the situation. I run an IT business and I've never gone to IT classes or achieved any certs... this is pretty much how I learn my stuff.
Anyway, I guess it's safe to say that an XFi card WILL NOT WORK on an ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe no matter what...
The only thing left to try is a new power supply.
This machine has seen 3 diff XFi cards, newer BIOS, cleared CMOS and battery, diff video cards, diff hard drives, XFi in all PCI slots... Win XP 32-bit pro, Win 7 64-bit ultimate...
did I miss ANYTHING AT ALL or can I conclude that this motherboard WILL NOT ACCEPT an XFi card? Do you think it's this particular board or the chipset this board is based on? I'm assuming it would be the SB chipset that handles this since it's PCI...

garo, reading through i didnt see you say anywhere that you tested teh pci slots themselves. Have your tried installing something other than a sound card in the pci slots like a network adapter or something. Perhaps its not a compatibility issue but your pci slots are just dead? I'm not sure if this possible but with all the effort you have put forth I figure its worth a try. I did a quick google search and I did happen to see a few people out there that were using a x-fi card on the same motherboard, but I didn't look in depth so who knows.

Thanks for the thought... maybe I should be REALLY planning this out better if I'm investing all this time, right? To answer your awesome question, no I haven't tested anything else in those slots... looks like that's next on the agenda!!
But the Device Mgr shows "Multimedia Audio Controller" so it's doing something right...
The last thing I tried b4 I left was a CMOS battery out for over an hour while CMOS jumper was in the clear position... all while the power plug was out and the PSU toggle was off.
Also tried plugging in the extra power floppy connector, and raised chipset voltages.... No difference.

9600GSO on that machine but could still be that I believe......good call.
Was a 9600GSO now an 8800GT.
I'm gonna be at that machine again this weekend, but may not have time bc of Easter.
I was thinking of upgrading from an 8800GT to an HD4850 since I play L4D2 and I like ATI better for source games...
Anyway, multimedia audio controller is the Xfi bc when I take the card out it's no longer in DM.
Maybe I'll try a PCI NIC to see if it's detected... if not, PCI is shot (which I doubt)... if it does work, then it's gotta be an issue between the XFi and the motherboard... I thought I read somewhere that some ppl had to send their XFi cards to creative for them to reprogram the EEPROM or something to work with certain boards/chipsets.

Godman, It may be a waste of time, However I read on the Creative forums about people having trouble with their boards reading their cards and they ended up having to unzip the driver pkg and manually install the actual driver exe file. I really don't recall if any of the cards were X-fi, IIRC it seemed most of the issue's were with Audigy cards. I will try and find the thread if your interested, The guy gave a pretty detailed description for the workaround.

I did try something like that in the very beginning actually... but I'll try it again just to make sure.
Of course the XFi EXE is different and there's no file called CTZAPXX.exe, so I guess I'll extract the EXE, go to DRIVERS folder, then the XFI folder, then SETUP.EXE.
I still have a feeling it's all fail... so sad....

Does the equipment work 100% under Windows XP, so that we can clearly establish that this is a driver problem fro your 64-bit OS, which I personally avoid on account of numerous equipment and apps having difficulties of the nature you describe.
If things do not work 100% under Windows XP, then we may have defective equipment here.
Always partition and image OS partion. I understand where you're coming from which is why I also always image the virgin install, so I can image back to initial state just in case I get a situation exactly like this. It helped me establish that a problem was a conflict with other software installed on the OS once.

I'm taking up the cause!
I've got the Support Pack downloading now but I can't seem to find a current link for the PAX 2010 suite. (It would be great if you could upload it to my ftp! :D)
Honestly... I thought you were an isolated incident. If I knew it was going to be THIS big of a pain in the ass to get the X-Fi working I never would've gotten it.
Now I've got TWO of them and I'll BE DAMNED if I don't get one of them working.
My problem isn't exactly like yours. The volume is just ridiculously low. I'm convinced it's a bad driver thing.
I'm going to go through all the alternative drivers until I find something that works with my system. If nothing works... my card will follow in the footsteps of your old card and wind up in the classifieds.

Dude I have THREE of them... neither worked in that system, under XP 32-bit and Windows 7 x64...
I'm going to test the PCI slots next chance I get...
I'd suggest giving up on those cards and look at something nice like an Asus Xonar DX..... I'm rather lucky with my current Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme, it actually works in my rig.
Wanted to use it in my HTPC but couldn't get it to work, same issue as you're having. In the end I just used the ATI HDMI sound out and chucked the creative card in my main rig.

Still no luck with this? You know my phone is always on. Give me a call next time you are at the rig, and I will see what ideas I can bounce off you. I seem to remember having a similar problem with the Audigy in my sig. I don't really remember what I had to do to get it working, but it has been in 3 different boards, and I seem to remember having the problem in all 3 boards. It took some time, but I was always able to get it worked out. Since you have 7 on that rig now, have you tried letting Windows Update find a driver for it? The last time I checked, the drivers that 7 pops up on the updates are from Creative.
I found the drivers Win 7 puts on actually work, the creative ones don't

It was the same way with my rig as well. When I was running Win7RC, I actually used the Vista drivers, and they actually worked better than the ones from Win Update. I am still irritated that Creative crippled my card from Vista up though. I don't think that is a good enough reason to go back to XP either.
I'd love to go to an Asus Xonar, but they just cost a little too much.

The X-Fi series had serious compatabilty issues with nforce chipsets
I managed to get it working ages ago, but forgot what I did
It was definitely something to do with safe mode, force detecting and some other stuff

Aha!!! See that's what I mentioned many posts back. I thought it may be an issue with the chipset...
Deadly, I have an X-Fi in my main rig, and it works... read the OP, it'll list the components I'm working with. It's a gaming machine I built to have at my parents' place for when I stay over their place, which I do so 1-2 weekends a month... I'm usually there on 1-2 Sundays a month my 3 bros, me, our sig others, and my parents have Sunday dinner... so if I'm there early or if I stayed over on a Sat night, my bros and I sometimes will game... so yes I have 2 gaming setups. :)
I'm going to update the OP with some new info... I swapped out the video card and now on Win 7 x64.

You missed the part where I asked for a reliable link to the current PAX suite... or maybe if you could upload it to my FTP server.

Yes, I did.
Send me a PM. I'll set up a temporary FTP account to my server for you.
Here's a list of what I have:

Just to add to the confusion, When I installed my card with this build I just downloaded the drivers from Creative's website and it worked right off the bat with no issue's in Win7.

I have that board too... works fine for me. It's my nvidia 570 SLI board, the ASUS M2N SLI Deluxe that has the problem. I think it has to do with the chipset...

Bumping this before it gets lost to the sands of time. These drivers are still going strong here on nForce4 with 4+ GB RAM. The crackling hasn't happened in so long that I no longer loathe Creative and my X-Fi. I would even go as far as to say the thing works well now and is enjoyable to use. For a while I was on the verge of ripping the thing out, throwing it off the roof and just sucking it up and using onboard sound.
A HUGE thanks to whichever random Creative driver engineer apparently solved the problems that have been plaguing these cards for years and years now. It's really nice that Creative hasn't been sitting with their thumbs up their asses for the entire time in between the last driver release and now... now all we need is a new official package and maybe the mass problems with these cards will be a thing of the past altogether.

I have been utilizing google to no end trying to help rainless come up with a solution to his dilemma, and still coming up empty. I did, however, come across something just last night that said Creative was taking these cards back, reflashing the BIOS on them, and sending them back to their owners, and in most cases, this seemed to take care of the incompatibility. I wonder if there might be a way that you could get your hands on this updated BIOS and try flashing it yourself? If anything, I think it would be worth a try.

Yes, I heard about having to send to creative to get it flashed, but I'm out of warranty... =/
I'm going to try that driver 2 posts above, hopefully by next week... not sure when I'm going back to my parents' again... I would go tonight, but I have a client in the AM on my side of the bridge (which would be a HUGE commute in the AM if I stayed over my rents' place)...

Awesomeness, I just built a brand new rig and have been having the same problem - PCI slot works - have a GB NIC in there working fine. Card works fine in another box.
BIOS shows a multimedia card. Win7 Shows HD audio device. Creative Drivers are not working (Supported device not found)...
MB: Gigabyte x58-ud7
CPU: i7-980
OS: Win7 x64
RAM: 12GB
GPU: 2xNvidia 480x
Going to try these out when I get home. Hopefully works.

Maybe there is a way to get the BIOS for the card and flash it yourself? I remember I had an old MSI FX5200, and the MSI software that was on the disc would actually download a new BIOS for the card everyonce in a while, flash it, and ask to reboot the system. Or would this be one of those things that Creative doesn't want us doing on our own, in fear of modded BIOS's for the cards becoming available?:rain:

I've yet to come around someone who has a bios flash method or even a bios available... I wouldn't even know how to flash the sound card if I had the bios... so I doubt it's possible. :(

It's not. They have to do it at the factory.

Okay I just tried, and as expected...
FAILURE!!!
Creative can #$^#$%&... really I want to curse them off. They deserve it.
I will now officially say... I QUIT. I'm throwing in the towel. In trying to pop an XFi card back into this machine I accidentally tugged on the microphone wire (the one that goes to my headset) and the end snapped off. Great... now my awesome microphone has a dead tip.
Did you ever get this figured out? the first card you sent back to me was in my girls system for about a month after it was returned... Just to make sure there was nothing wrong with it.
After I was happy that it was working and nothing was wrong, I resold it and the new owner was happy with the card.
I'm going to guess its just the motherboard and card(s) don't like each other? I know some of the nf chipsets had problems with the on-board memory and there was a way to turn that off. Have you tried that?

What onboard memory... you mean the onboard video? I tried everything known to man... it was IMPOSSIBLE to get any X-Fi card to work on that board. I tried 3 diff cards too.
I probably spent 20+ hours on it... I don't think I'll EVER try again. It's a waste of my time. I could have worked minimum wage and bought brand new parts with the amount of time I spent!! :D

So I guess there's no solution to this problem, eh? I have a XFI Fatality PCI, and it doesn't even get recognized by my new win 7 64bit pc. I don't blame it, cause I treated it like **** since it stopped working in my old winxp pc.
Time to get a new card I suppose. Although the new onboard sound on my Asus P7P55D-E Pro is made by VIA... hmm...
I spent countless hours of labor and NEVER found a solution. In the end, I would have been better off buying a new board or card...

...because it wouldn't be the first time that two hardware components are not physically compatible, period.
My very first computer had two physically incompatible components and it took me just as long to prove it to the manufacturer of my PC who only then replaced it with another model of card.

Why do we need to go through this risk/aggravation/loss of ~$200 for discrete sound? I'm about to get an Asus Xonar, but worried about compatibility. Better work with my Asus mobo, goddamn it. =)

I have Asus Xonar DX and I had to get it because I needed a PCIe card to free up my PCI slot where I used to have the most excellent Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and then the compatibility issues with my Xonar forced me to use the Xonar for playing music but enable onboard sonud to record through it without an echo:

The error I get is what you see in the attached image.
Probably .Net Framework missing.
And the error from the installer not finding any sound card is probably because Windows reported zero devices of the sound card class or you're not running the installer as administrator.
