View Full Version : Thinking about watercooling

Hey all!

Let me preface this with that I don't want to be coming off as some random dude on the internet looking for handouts of advice. Because once I finish this project in the following post, the extra case I have will be a dedicated Folding@Home box. Reading on posts, and reading up on Folding@Home has definitely inspired me to want to assist, and hopefully join the OC Forums Folding Team.

So I have been thinking about fan cooling vs watercooling with this new project I am going to start. I was hoping to maybe get some perspective on things from those who have watercooling.

This case is going to be in my room, so noise is a factor, but not a huge deal as I always have music playing (heavy sleeper too )

Background of my project:

I am going to be building a computer with the Mountain Mods Duality case (http://www.mountainmods.com/ascension-duality-mirror-black-powder-coat-original-top-p-463.html).

On the left side will be running my workstation (AMD Phenom x4 955 3.2GHz/4GB DDR3 RAM/Raptor 300GB HD, BFG 260GTX)

- CPU Cooling: Vigor Gaming Monsoon III

On the right side will be running Server Small Business 2008 (Pentium D 2.8GHz, 6GB RAM, Motherboard TBD, Hard Drive Config TBD).
- CPU Cooling: Vigor Gaming Monsoon III

For case cooling, I was thinking about loading up the front with Enermax Clusters (going with a black and white theme), and the back with 80MM fans.

As I was thinking today, I had this urge to look into watercooling, because I mean. If I'm gonna pull something off like this, why not go the distance, right? But the problem is, I have NO IDEA on where to start as far as looking for parts, what the loop would look like, etc.. I am a complete watercooling noob!

I was hoping to get input, as always it's appreciated! Hope you all had a great Holiday Weekend!

reading sucks, i know, but it will help in the long run.

As well as reading (that Tom's Hardware article is great btw!), you're going to want to think of such things as component placement, your budget, and your cooling goals. With a case like hat, I'm sure you fit a very nice watercooling setup in it. Basically the way watercooling works is that a pump pumps the water through the enclosed system. Generally speaking, water is pumped through the waterblock on top of the cpu. Heat is transferred from the block to the water, which is then carried away to the radiator, where it cooled, just like on your car. From there, the cooled water is either pumped back to the cpu or to a resevoir, whatever your particular setup dictates. If you ahve any questions, please ask and we will be glad to help!

As far as the actual tubing goes, I'd go with regular vinyl tubing from Home Depot. I recently got 10 feet for just over $3. I don't really know if you want your tubes colored or not, but the tubes are clear. If you do want your tubes to be colored, you can add food coloring. Not dye, food coloring. I've been using it in my tubes for a few months now and they're not staining or fogging up at all. :D

I hope this helped you out a little bit! And welcome to the Water Cooling community!
