Even before I changed everything....I was going to flash the bios to accept a faster proc..guess what, there is no bios update for that board or anything of that nature. Gateway said the board was manufactured by Keystone(ever heard of them) I havent. But on the board itself, it clearly says, MS-6389.....did a search, and the board is MSI. Gateway also, apparently when they buy these boards off of who ever it is they buy them off of, they take and put there own bios's in them, I ran a program called ambid or something, to give me the name and all that info about the bios. it said that I had to contact gateway. That it had a Gateway bios in it...........boy......I bet that was a nice bios. bios was by AMI, and I bet if you looked at the bios, in about 5 seconds, you would have seen every setting in there......lol

im pretty sure i voided my gateway warranty when i upgraded the ram. so then id have to say that you may have possibly done so as well. and you get a monitor as well.

so you make out with monitor, cables, case, the gateway name, and a cute little worthless cow box. i salute you. (you bought it for the cow box didnt you)

I will never buy Gateway again myself. I was trying to upgrade my mom's old PC from Win95 to Win98 because of some instability she was beginning to have on the system. That didn't work, so I tried WinME. Again, no dice. The problem was with the integrated video. Gateway did not have any updated drivers for the board and simply would not support the system with anything other than Win95. So I scrapped/stripped the system and built her a T-Bird 1.4 on an Asus DDR mobo and a gForce2MX video card (and I bought her a new monitor to boot!).

She's very happy now...

...and I have some more used parts.

I have one question, if you did all that upgrading after shelling out big money for that Gateway, why didn't you just build a system from scratch in the first place?? Not trying to be a smart a** but that seems like an awful lot to spend on a monitor. Hopefully thats a big monitor:)

I bought a used P2 266 Gateway for like $25. I gutted the 200 watt PSU for its fan and tossed it aside. But 200 watt for an Athlon system?!? Damn.. What were they thinking?

You did the right thing...

Though I would've ordered from Micron instead.

It gets better. They use a 145Watt PSU for their P3 and Celeron systems.

My friend todd had an old pII 266 system, I tried to upgrade to WinMe on it for him, and it'd load up, then when it rebooted it would search for the gateway restore cd...damn bios.

I learned quick that Gateway has their own bios's. You can't upgrade the OS on them...alteanst not from a fresh format, and with windows why would you bother doing it any other way?

The reason the bios is locked out is becuase they have everything working so that its somewhat stable...you change one setting and throw the balance off and live with bsod's the rest of your life, lol. I bet they've got special memory "tweaks" to give EXTRA latency...even more than the stock bios!

For the price they sell things and what you get, its highway robbery.

I do have to agree with an earlier post though, rathaer than upgrade like that, why not just return the gateway, get your money back, and build one from scratch. Or does gateway not allow returns?

Oh well, whats done is done...good way to void the warrantey though! Keep the gateway floppy in it, and try and send it back for support, LOL
