Hey guys, this is my first post but I've been visiting this forum for about six months now. I know. I know. I should have registered a long time ago, because there is so much a person can learn just by reading the threads.

I use a cable modem to access the internet through my local cable company. A firewall (ZAP) against hackers and other unwelcome attacks.

Now last month when I went here https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 to test my computer; shields up, and ports close, everything was ok.

This is what I was confronted with when my shields was tested today:

Attempting connection to your computer. . .
Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of your personal files for reading,
writing, modification and even deletion by anyone, anywhere, on the Internet!

What can I do about this? I did a clean re-installed of windows three times to no avail. I did get a lot of pop ups of programs requesting for server rights. I denied all of them, and my computer is still functioning as a server.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Forums!

XP may have installed Internet Information Services as a default: if so, Control Panel->Administrative Tools will show you if it is running.

You can Disable the service or set it on Manual from the Services icon in Admin tools also: at the bottom, World Wide Web Publishing. Right-click and set it for whichever you want.

FTP Publishing may be installed by default as well: same places to check.

if im not mistaken that little quote you gave us is the preamble to a port scan and is refering to a scan for netbios enabled port 139, which basically enables LMHOSTS hacking and also your file and print sharing. someone could just map your drive and serve of it, etc. the prob is that most people just leave open shares not passworded

i have been to that site so just check it again and give it time to complete the scans, also use more then one security type site to do your system scans

just go ahead and run u some scans, i would think you are ok
