View Full Version : easiest way to Transfer files from win xp to win 7
Im trying to figure out how to transfer files from my laptop with win xp to my desktop with win 7. I have an Ethernet cross over cable already. Whats the easiest way to do this? I couldnt figure out how with the cross over cable.

this can be an start point:
1- put both compters in the same workgroup
2- add the same user name and password to both systems
3- set a static ip in both and make sure they are in same subnet (a- 192.168.1.1 b- 192.168.1.2)

Personally... I'd just take the HDD out of your laptop, put it in your desktop and then transfer from laptop hdd to desktop one... just seems less stressful, easier, and quicker... provided you know how to take a hdd out of a laptop, and then you have the connector in your desktop...

i may do this but ive never removed a hdd from a laptop. do laptop hdd connect with sata?

some do, some dont, whats the brand and model of your laptop. i can check for you

you dont have to have the same username. You will just be prompted to input the user and pass when you access the files.

+1, i was just trying to make his life easier

can you go into more detail how i set a static ip and what to do after that. the link looks like its just for printers
i just set up some static ips although im not sure if i did it correctly. it wont recognize the network. Ive disabled the firewalls on both and they are in the same workgroup

if you open a dos screen can you ping the ip of the other machine?

just because I haven't seen it asked or mentioned. How much are you looking to transfer? If it's not a whole lot of data a good USB drive or even CD-R might suit your needs. Heck, I've even used Gmail for smaller quick files.
If it's tens of gigs then I'd likely continue down the path you're on.
